Whether you’re looking to host regular movie nights for a crowd or lounge solo on weeknights, Sundays’ line of cozy couches is designed to fit the bill—and that’s especially true of the brand’s Movie Night model. With multi-density foam, plush cushions and an impressively deep seat, this couch is built for comfort. In fact, once you’ve nestled in, it’s as much a mental as a physical challenge to pull yourself away; for many, though, that’s part of the appeal. “It’s a couch you can really sink into,” says our tester.

Aesthetically, the Movie Night exudes a laid-back vibe—it’s not structured, so it’s best for those who like that lived-in look. In terms of the upholstery, it’s wrapped in a durable performance linen blend fabric, available in 11 neutral shades. During stain testing, this performance fabric held up impressively, making it a practical choice for busy households. Maintenance is straightforward, too: The upholstery can be either dry-cleaned or machine-washed on a cold, gentle cycle and air-dried.

The only real downside is that “this is definitely not a pet-friendly couch,” notes our tester. “The dogs jumping on it have caused the roughness of their paw pads to wear down the material, and while it hides cat claw marks better than others I’ve had, they’re still visible.”

  • You prefer a more traditional, structured look

Though options that combine style, comfort and enough space for the whole family are few and far between, the Joybird Bryant L-Sectional offers exactly that. Thanks to deep, roomy cushions and thoughtful construction, it’s perfect for lounging and withstanding stains and other accidents. The couch is filled with blown fiber to mimic down, offering a cloud-like feel; this is enhanced by sloping arms, plush back cushions and a low-to-the-ground profile.

“When it came time to upgrade our couch, my husband and I wanted to find something that was roomy, high quality and as comfortable as possible,” says our tester. “The Bryant Sectional from Joybird has delivered on all fronts. Its cushions are substantial and feel like you’re lounging on cloud-like pillows. They’re not firm like you find in a lot of other couches.”

Beyond its cozy appeal, the Bryant also stands out for its reassuring functionality. The sturdy, kiln-dried hardwood frame is wrapped in 2 pounds of foam, which is more than the industry standard. Because of its exceedingly lounge-forward construction, the manufacturer admits this sectional may show wear more quickly over time compared with traditional, structured builds. But it’s easy to maintain with regular re-fluffing (like our top pick from Sundays), and is also backed by the brand’s lifetime warranty—so we think it’s worth the gamble, as does our satisfied tester.

  • You like a really soft couch or deep seats
  • You want a longer-lasting warranty

The Burrow Nomad Sofa is an excellent choice if you prefer a firmer couch and want something that keeps its shape without regular re-fluffing. It’s also sturdy and durable, built with galvanized steel hardware, a hardwood frame and stain-resistant performance fabric. (Bonus: This couch also comes with a special brush to keep it looking good.)

The Nomad has an attractive mid-century modern aesthetic, making it a great fit for contemporary living spaces. What’s more, its thoughtful design details make it ideal for a variety of lifestyles. The modular layout is great for apartment dwellers, as well as small but growing families, and the sofa components ship in smaller packages—a practical choice for small-space living. “I added on the ottoman and moveable chaise and can easily remove or move them if I just want a sofa instead,” says our tester, who uses the Nomad inside her extra bedroom with the ottoman as a makeshift coffee table. “It fits perfectly,” she adds.

In terms of seating, the Nomad is a very comfortable couch for those who prefer more supportive cushioning. “I wake up feeling refreshed, all thanks to its comfortable yet firm design,” our tester notes. This is thanks to the cushions’ multi-layered foam construction, including a high-density core for structure and two softer, lower-density layers for just-right plushness. The built-in USB outlet is a handy feature if you work from home and want to place the couch in an office. Our tester also highlights the flippable back cushions—they’re tufted on the other side, offering more style versatility.

Most Comfortable Couch For Pet Owners

A Highly Customizable, Modular Sectional Designed To Handle Messes

Lovesac Sactional

Dimensions: 99 x 28.5 x 41 inches () | Seat depth: 29 inches | Fabric: Various, including velvet, chenille and poly-linen | Fill: Polyester fiber blend or synthetic fiber-topped foam | Colors: 100+, including Charcoal Gray and Vintage Blue | Warranty: Lifetime (hard parts), 3 years (soft parts) | Shipping: About 2 weeks, free delivery

Best for:

  • Those who want modularity and customizing almost every aspect of their couch
  • Households with pets that enjoy sitting on the sofa
  • Playrooms or recreational rooms

Skip if:

  • You don’t want a laborious assembly process
  • You want consistent support in the cushions (some are slightly firmer than others)

Ultimately, what makes a couch comfortable will be unique to you and your household, and that’s why Lovesac’s Sactionals made our list: You’re able to tailor nearly every aspect of the couch to fit your comfort preferences and living space. This includes your choice of configuration, upholstery material, arm style and cushion fill. Plus, its modular design is also endlessly configurable. Our tester, whose family (and dog) has been using one of Lovesac’s three-seat Sactionals with an ottoman for over two years, says that “although the foundational pieces are large, they’re easy to slide around on a rug or carpet—then clip into place—if you want to move them.”

For families with pets and children, there’s one more reason to love the Sactional—namely, its removable, machine-washable covers. “Generally, spots and spills can be easily wiped up with a sponge. It’s the reason why I have no issues with my young son snacking on the couch (although crumbs are another story),” our tester notes. She also attests to the fabric’s resilience. “It has held up wonderfully to jumping, climbing and, of course, lots of sprawling.”

The Lovesac Sactional is also versatile in another way: Its aesthetic blends in with a wide range of tastes. “I like its simple style that’s both clean and laidback. The wide cushions and deep seats are also welcoming,” our tester says. Note that while those extra-deep seats (29 inches) are a must for some loungers, those with mobility issues should consider one of our shallower picks.

One thing to note is that Sactionals are delivered in multiple boxes (in fact, our tester received 13 separate ones) that you’ll not only need to tote into your home, but also assemble yourself. That process can take hours, even though the included instructions are easy to follow. Another thing to keep in mind is that the support levels in each cushion has become inconsistent after years of rigorous use. “A couple are a bit firmer, and a couple you sink right into. We prefer the firmer ones, as the softer ones lack support,” our tester recently reported.

  • You’d rather invest less in a sofa bed or futon

Finding a sleeper sofa that can both withstand daily lounging and offer mattress-level comfort for sleep is a tall order, but the DreamSofa Cologne (also our pick as the best sleeper sofa for small spaces) manages to do both. Built with a sturdy kiln-dried hardwood frame and high-quality springs, this sofa is designed to feel like a permanent piece in your home.

Our tester, who has used the Cologne in her 850-square-foot apartment for almost three years, notes that the variety of customization options was a big draw. For instance, you can choose your preferred seat firmness level, a big determinant for how comfortable a couch ultimately is. “We upgraded to the Wave (medium-firm) cushioning, as there were reports online that the Cloud (soft cushioning) sinks over time,” she says. “The Wave came a little firm, but it has softened beautifully with time.”

The Cologne’s aesthetic is sleek but simple, making it a versatile anchor point depending on the room you use it in. It also has an extensive selection of fabric options, including pet-friendly ones, that made it a major selling point for our tester, who has three cats. The velvet upholstery she chose has proven remarkably resilient against her felines (a bonus is that they tend to avoid scratching the fabric because they don’t like the feel of its texture under their claws).

Beyond the fabric, it’s notably easy to transition from sofa to bed. “It’s a pullout and the grab bars are easy to reach,” our tester adds, making it a practical choice for those who frequently host guests and don’t want to struggle with heavy machinery each time. And speaking of, we’d be remiss not to mention how comfortable sleeping on its pull-out mattress is. Our tester says her guests give the Cologne high marks compared with traditional pullouts they’ve tried, which end up being either too thin or springy. Her parents, in particular, report that they find the mattress genuinely comfortable for multi-night stays.

Most Comfortable Velvet Couch

A Deep-Seated, Easy-Maintenance Option For Fans Of Plush Velvet

Interior Define James Three-Seat Sofa With Contrast Piping

Dimensions: 104 x 40 x 35 inches | Seat depth: 26 inches (30 inches available) | Fabric: Performance velvet | Fill: Multi-layer foam base, down blend top (upgrades available) | Colors: 35 options, including Lavender and Galaxy | Warranty: 10 years | Shipping: 8 to 14 weeks, $299 delivery

Best for:

  • An elevated look that’s also easy to maintain
  • A balance of plushness and support
  • Those who prefer deep seats

Skip if:

  • You prefer a plusher seat

If you’re looking for a sofa with the decadent feel and luxe look of velvet without worrying about the hassle of keeping it clean, the Interior Define James Sofa is a great choice. Our tester, who opted for the 104-inch-wide version (it’s also available in 112- and 120-inch lengths) reports that it struck just the right balance of support and plushness in daily use: “I found it just as comfortable for working from home as it was for cuddling up for a nap.” The cushions, which are filled with layers of foam and a down alternative, provided consistent support without losing their shape.

The James is highly customizable, and its deep-seated profile (our tester chose the 44-inch depth, which has 30-inch seats) helps it feel even more lounge-worthy. But unlike equally deep sofas like our picks from Sundays and Joybird, the contrast piping detail, as well as customizable leg color, gives the sofa a more elevated look. Despite it not having the pull-out capabilities of our sleeper pick from DreamSofa, this couch’s generous proportions also make it a solid sleep solution for guests. “I also set it up for an overnight visitor (removing the back cushions to make it into a single bed), and it was met with great reviews,” our tester says.

But back to the real standout feature of the James, which is the durability of its performance velvet fabric: Our tester was initially concerned about the light green fabric color, but reports that this model turned out to be one of the easiest to clean when compared with other couches she tested. “I was impressed by how easily Nutella, cranberry juice and wet coffee grounds came almost completely out with just blotting,” she says.

Most Comfortable Traditional Couch

An Attractive, Deep-Seated Classic Built For Longevity

Pottery Barn York Square Arm Slipcovered Sofa

Dimensions: 94.5 x 37.5 x 36 inches (Grand Sofa) | Seat depth: 24 inches | Fabric: Various, including chenille and performance suede | Fill: High-density foam or down blend with foam core | Colors: 100+ options, including Graphite and Indigo | Warranty: None (3-year available) | Shipping: 6 to 8 weeks, $279 to $429

Best for:

  • You’re looking for a traditional, timeless design
  • Customizing almost every aspect of your couch
  • Its balance of plushness and support

Skip if:

  • You want a couch backed by a warranty
  • You prefer a more modern aesthetic

For those who prefer a timeless look over the popular mid-century modern aesthetic, the Pottery Barn York Slipcovered Sofa is the gold standard. One of its defining style features is the skirted detail on the slipcover, which is removable for easy maintenance. While it lacks the modularity of the more modern picks on our list, its range of customizations is impressive, offering everything from bench seats to 10 upholstery choices and over 100 fabric color options.

“So many naps were had on this couch,” our tester says, noting that at 94.5 inches long (she tested the Grand Sofa size), combined with the deep seats, there’s more than enough room to get comfortably horizontal. “Once you remove the back pillows, it’s deep enough to qualify as a twin bed—and for that reason, we’ve used it to house overnight guests on at least a dozen occasions,” she explains.

The York sofa is also designed for longevity, having “worked beautifully from day one all the way until our last day in our apartment,” our tester says. After three years of daily use, the cushions kept their soft but still supportive feel. The slipcover, too, showed “fantastic durability” after having gone through the ringer at her house. “I had remarkable luck getting everything from chocolate and red wine to toddler snacks out of the seat cushions,” she says of its performance fabric.

The downside to the York sofa is its lengthy lead time. “It’s an unfortunate con,” our tester says, but adds that it’s a small price to pay for a near-perfect couch—and it doesn’t hurt that the white-glove service does the heavy lifting and setup for you. If you have the space for its generous proportions and are looking for a comfortable, well-built couch with a timeless appeal, she says the York is money well spent.

How We Chose The Most Comfortable Couches

To assemble this list of the most comfortable couches and then determine how to test them, we looked for products from our home editors’ trusted brands that featured plush and supportive cushions, deep seats, durable upholstery, and a high-quality frame.

Selection Process

Our selection process focused primarily on these criteria:

  • Cushion construction and fill: We prioritized sofas with constructions that tend to be the most comfortable, specifically focusing on fills with down, a down-blend or synthetic down, then wrapped around a foam or high-density foam core.
  • Upholstery and fabric quality: We focused on couches made with durable performance fabrics like polyester, poly-linen and velvet, which feel good against skin and are made to withstand regular use. Additionally, we kept an eye out for couches with removable, machine-washable cushions to make maintenance easier.
  • Customization: We paid particular attention to whether the cushion type and fill can be customized (e.g., tufted vs. flat, all-foam vs. foam-down blend), how many configurations you can choose from, and whether the couch is modular and can have pieces added to it down the line. If other aspects of the couch could be customized—like the leg color—we made special note of that too.
  • Style: We considered a variety of aesthetics, including mid-century modern, minimalist and traditional, as well as whether the upholstery appeared luxe and high-quality. We noted special details like contrast piping, tufting with buttons, built-in USB chargers and special leg materials.

Testing Methodology

Fifteen panel testers put more than a dozen couch models through their paces for at least a year and a half (and in many cases more). These are the features they evaluated specifically for this guide:

  • Nap-ability: Testers took note of how nap-worthy the couch is—namely whether they felt any joint pain after waking up, tossed and turned a lot to get comfortable, or had their limbs fall asleep due to a harder-than-expected surface. Or, they reported whether they had trouble getting up due to its supreme comfort.
  • Depth and cushioning: Testers compared whether the cushions felt more or less comfortable than other couches they’ve lounged in, noted whether they sank or hovered on top as they sat, and assessed whether they found it easy or difficult to get comfortable. They also assessed how challenging it was to get in and out of the couch, whether they felt perched on the edge of the seat, and if they had enough room to cross their legs. Lastly, they noted how conducive the couch was for working from home for long hours.
  • Capacity: They noted how many people can sit and lounge comfortably on the couch for a movie night or hangout session, and asked guests how they felt.
  • Durability: If the sofa came with a performance fabric or was marketed as stain-resistant, testers used a fabric swatch to test how easy it was to spot-clean specific stains from Nutella, a dark juice and wet coffee grounds. They noted whether the couch’s upholstery started showing signs of wear and fading after regular use, and especially after use by pets and kids. They also used a jump test to see how well the sofa’s frame withstood this activity, and reported any creaks, bending, or breaking.
  • Delivery and assembly: Our testers kept track of how long it took for their sofa to get delivered after ordering it online, as well as whether it came with white-glove delivery. They noted how difficult it was to bring the couch or its parts into their home. Finally, they evaluated how easy it was to set up the couch, how long it took from start to finish, whether they needed tools, and whether the assembly needed more than one person.
