In terms of seating, the Nomad is a very comfortable couch for those who prefer more supportive cushioning. “I wake up feeling refreshed, all thanks to its comfortable yet firm design,” our tester notes. This is thanks to the cushions’ multi-layered foam construction, including a high-density core for structure and two softer, lower-density layers for just-right plushness. Our tester says her guests give the Cologne high marks compared with traditional pullouts they’ve tried, which end up being either too thin or springy. Her parents, in particular, report that they find the mattress genuinely comfortable for multi-night stays.
If you’re looking for a sofa with the decadent feel and luxe look of velvet without worrying about the hassle of keeping it clean, the Interior Define James Sofa is a great choice. Our tester, who opted for the 104-inch-wide version (it’s also available in 112- and 120-inch lengths) reports that it struck just the right balance of support and plushness in daily use: “I found it just as comfortable for working from home as it was for cuddling up for a nap.” The cushions, which are filled with layers of foam and a down alternative, provided consistent support without losing their shape.
The James is highly customizable, and its deep-seated profile (our tester chose the 44-inch depth, which has 30-inch seats) helps it feel even more lounge-worthy. But unlike equally deep sofas like our picks from Sundays and Joybird, the contrast piping detail, as well as customizable leg color, gives the sofa a more elevated look. Despite it not having the pull-out capabilities of our sleeper pick from DreamSofa, this couch’s generous proportions also make it a solid sleep solution for guests. “I also set it up for an overnight visitor (removing the back cushions to make it into a single bed), and it was met with great reviews,” our tester says.
But back to the real standout feature of the James, which is the durability of its performance velvet fabric: Our tester was initially concerned about the light green fabric color, but reports that this model turned out to be one of the easiest to clean when compared with other couches she tested. “I was impressed by how easily Nutella, cranberry juice and wet coffee grounds came almost completely out with just blotting,” she says.
For those who prefer a timeless look over the popular mid-century modern aesthetic, the Pottery Barn York Slipcovered Sofa is the gold standard. One of its defining style features is the skirted detail on the slipcover, which is removable for easy maintenance. While it lacks the modularity of the more modern picks on our list, its range of customizations is impressive, offering everything from bench seats to 10 upholstery choices and over 100 fabric color options.
“So many naps were had on this couch,” our tester says, noting that at 94.5 inches long (she tested the Grand Sofa size), combined with the deep seats, there’s more than enough room to get comfortably horizontal. “Once you remove the back pillows, it’s deep enough to qualify as a twin bed—and for that reason, we’ve used it to house overnight guests on at least a dozen occasions,” she explains.
The York sofa is also designed for longevity, having “worked beautifully from day one all the way until our last day in our apartment,” our tester says. After three years of daily use, the cushions kept their soft but still supportive feel. The slipcover, too, showed “fantastic durability” after having gone through the ringer at her house. “I had remarkable luck getting everything from chocolate and red wine to toddler snacks out of the seat cushions,” she says of its performance fabric.
The downside to the York sofa is its lengthy lead time. “It’s an unfortunate con,” our tester says, but adds that it’s a small price to pay for a near-perfect couch—and it doesn’t hurt that the white-glove service does the heavy lifting and setup for you. If you have the space for its generous proportions and are looking for a comfortable, well-built couch with a timeless appeal, she says the York is money well spent.
How We Chose The Most Comfortable Couches
To assemble this list of the most comfortable couches and then determine how to test them, we looked for products from our home editors’ trusted brands that featured plush and supportive cushions, deep seats, durable upholstery, and a high-quality frame.
Selection Process
Our selection process focused primarily on these criteria:
- Cushion construction and fill: We prioritized sofas with constructions that tend to be the most comfortable, specifically focusing on fills with down, a down-blend or synthetic down, then wrapped around a foam or high-density foam core.
- Upholstery and fabric quality: We focused on couches made with durable performance fabrics like polyester, poly-linen and velvet, which feel good against skin and are made to withstand regular use. Additionally, we kept an eye out for couches with removable, machine-washable cushions to make maintenance easier.
- Customization: We paid particular attention to whether the cushion type and fill can be customized (e.g., tufted vs. flat, all-foam vs. foam-down blend), how many configurations you can choose from, and whether the couch is modular and can have pieces added to it down the line. Testing Methodology
Fifteen panel testers put more than a dozen couch models through their paces for at least a year and a half (and in many cases more). These are the features they evaluated specifically for this guide:
- Nap-ability: Testers took note of how nap-worthy the couch is—namely whether they felt any joint pain after waking up, tossed and turned a lot to get comfortable, or had their limbs fall asleep due to a harder-than-expected surface. Or, they reported whether they had trouble getting up due to its supreme comfort.
- Depth and cushioning: Testers compared whether the cushions felt more or less comfortable than other couches they’ve lounged in, noted whether they sank or hovered on top as they sat, and assessed whether they found it easy or difficult to get comfortable. They also assessed how challenging it was to get in and out of the couch, whether they felt perched on the edge of the seat, and if they had enough room to cross their legs. Lastly, they noted how conducive the couch was for working from home for long hours.
- Capacity: They noted how many people can sit and lounge comfortably on the couch for a movie night or hangout session, and asked guests how they felt.
- Durability: If the sofa came with a performance fabric or was marketed as stain-resistant, testers used a fabric swatch to test how easy it was to spot-clean specific stains from Nutella, a dark juice and wet coffee grounds. They noted whether the couch’s upholstery started showing signs of wear and fading after regular use, and especially after use by pets and kids. They also used a jump test to see how well the sofa’s frame withstood this activity, and reported any creaks, bending, or breaking.
- Delivery and assembly: Our testers kept track of how long it took for their sofa to get delivered after ordering it online, as well as whether it came with white-glove delivery. They noted how difficult it was to bring the couch or its parts into their home.
