As magical and exciting as pregnancy is, it’s also filled with lots of questions, fears and anxieties. When I was pregnant with my first child, pregnancy books helped answer so many questions, including some that I didn’t even know I had. I’ve found that the best pregnancy books provide evidence-based information about pregnancy and birth, helping parents-to-be learn what to expect in a relatable way that doesn’t increase fears and anxieties. Our top pick, Pregnancy, Childbirth And The Newborn, provides information on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, and it’s written by five experts with decades of experience.

I found this book really helpful when I was pregnant with my first. It’s particularly helpful for women who want to avoid interventions whenever possible. You’ll garner a lot of information about what to expect during labor and childbirth and how to work with your body. However, if you know that you’ll be having a C-section or that you may want or need interventions such as being induced or getting an epidural, this probably isn’t the book for you.

Expecting Better: Why The Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong—And What You Really Need To Know
Recommended by Vernon and Lopez along with many members of the Forbes Vetted staff, Expecting Better by economist Emily Osterchallenges conventional pregnancy advice by evaluating studies and data. “There is so much online and on social media that it is hard to know what to trust, and what is just clickbait versus actually something valuable that may change aspects of how they care for themselves during pregnancy,” says Vernon. This book empowers you by helping you understand the statistics and risks associated with different choices, so you can make decisions that are right for you and your pregnancy.

What To Do When You're Having Two: The Twins Survival Guide from Pregnancy Through The First Year
As a mom to twins, I know that being pregnant with multiples and having multiple newborns is very different than only having one. I often say that it’s not twice as hard, it’s 50 times as hard. Of course, it’s full of joy, too, and having a good book that can walk you through the unique challenges you might face can help everything go more smoothly. The book covers information not only about twin pregnancy and delivery but also about the gear you’ll need for twins, tandem breastfeeding and navigating bonding with both babies.
“I found this book to be very useful, but my one critique is it often feels like it’s written for birth moms,” says baby and kids gear editor Margaret Badore, who also has twins. “Dads and other partners may want to do some additional reading.”

One of the most famous parenting practices to come out of the book is “le pause,” or waiting a moment to allow baby to settle before soothing them. How We Chose The Best Pregnancy Books
There are so many great pregnancy books out there—it was impossible to include every good book. Here’s a peek at how we narrowed down our list.
We considered books that we’ve read as well as those recommended by Lopez, Vernon and members of the Forbes staff. For books that we haven’t personally read, we did extensive research and read many online reviews.
We asked Lopez and Vernon to list common questions pregnant women have as well as topics they believe pregnancy books should cover. We used their responses to help guide our selection process.
We included pregnancy books on a variety of topics as well as those that address pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We included books that take a more serious and factual approach along with options that are more lighthearted.
What To Look For In The Best Pregnancy Books
Perspective
There are so many pregnancy books out there, and all approach pregnancy, birth and postpartum from a different point of view. When choosing a book, think about what you want to get out of the book because that can help narrow down your options.
There are so many lenses to view pregnancy through, says Vernon. “Many aspects of pregnancy care are very personal and related to societal, cultural and personal values.” Also remember as you’re reading that you don’t have to agree with everything in the book; you can use your own judgment and discernment and buy-in to what makes sense for you.
Validity
Make sure that the book is providing credible information. “Just like online, you can find books that will make many claims and recommendations that may not be backed up by good evidence and expertise,” says Vernon. “Always look into the sources that are quoted and if you have any questions talk to your obstetric care team for questions and clarity.”
Author Credentials
While some pregnancy books are written by experts with multiple degrees and certifications, some are simply written by parents. “We need to hear from a variety of experts in the field, not just clinicians, but also doulas, physical therapists, nutritionists, trainers and psychotherapists—professionals who can integrate experience and accumulated knowledge with the data to make more comprehensive, nuanced recommendations,” says Vernon. Consider the author’s credentials and whether they are qualified to write about the specific topic.
