While the shoes only come in one width, the memory foam insoles are removable and come in . There are three color options—Honey, Black and Brown—to suit different occasions; just keep in mind that the contrasting white sole may come off as a bit too casual for highly formal settings.

Best Value Dress Shoes For Comfort

Minimalist With A Grippy Rubber Sole

Johnston & Murphy Lewis Plain Toe

Forbes Vetted

Forbes Vetted ratings are based on thorough evaluations by our editorial team to help you choose the best products with confidence.

4.0

Sizes: 8 to 14 | Widths: Medium (D) | Colors: Black | Upper material: Full grain leather | Sole material: Leather and rubber

Best for:

  • Comfort, thanks to its memory foam insoles
  • Budget-conscious shoppers

Skip if:

  • You want a pair of shoes that will last you for several years to come

The Johnston & Murphy Lewis Plain Toe is a great option for those who don’t mind swapping premium leather for an affordable price tag. Like some of its more expensive counterparts, it has a cushioned memory foam insole and a grippy rubber outsole. You won’t find many ergonomic features like a perforated upper or EVA midsole, but if these aren’t a priority to you, then we recommend this pick. “It’s not the flashiest shoe, but it’s straightforward and gets the job done,” says Flood. He mentions that the leather is of lower quality than the other picks on this list, but that it’s fair considering the price.

Other Men’s Dress Shoes We Tested

In addition to the above styles, Flood tried three other pairs of dress shoes that didn’t make the cut. Here’s what we left off the list and why:

  • : These dress shoes from Allen Edmonds are incredibly well made, and Flood notes that the construction is of a higher caliber than some of the other picks. However, they caused discomfort upon initial wear and didn’t provide much in terms of arch support.
  • : Flood found these penny loafers to be lightweight and breathable, making them a solid warm weather or summer option. However, the lack of comfy insole or midsole kept them from making the list.
  • : This shoe from Florsheim has a perforated nubuck leather upper that increases airflow and a neoprene lining that wicks away excess moisture. While Flood liked the breathability of this shoe, he felt the overall style left some to be desired.

How We Tested The Best Men’s Comfortable Dress Shoes

To determine the most comfortable dress shoes for men, we first tapped into our deep knowledge of men’s footwear, assembling a shortlist of 10 dress shoe styles from brands with excellent reputations.

Real-World Testing

Forbes Vetted group project manager Matt Flood tested each pair of dress shoes over the course of a few weeks. While wearing them in various professional settings, Flood evaluated each shoe’s breathability, fit, weight and wear, making notes of what stood out and what could be better.

Final Curation

Taking Flood’s critical opinions into account, fashion updates writer Claire Epting assembled this final list of the seven most comfortable dress shoes. During this phase, she also identified helpful specifications for each pair, including:

  • Size range
  • Width options
  • Color selections

Customer Feedback And Standards

To ensure our findings were in line with other wearers’ experiences, Epting pored over dozens of customer reviews to learn more about how each pick has performed with a wide range of shoppers. As a final quality check, we ensured that all of our selections have an average customer rating of at least 4 out of 5 stars.

How To Pick Comfortable Men’s Dress Shoes

There are a few key factors to keep in mind when shopping for comfortable dress shoes. Here are our expert-backed tips for finding the right pair.

Fit

Dress shoes should be neither too tight or nor loose; they should be snug with a bit of room at the toes. Every brand has slightly different sizing, so it may take a few tries for you to find the right fit. “Remember you have a foot shape, not a shoe size, and it’s best to find what works for your individual foot morphology, or shape,” says Colin Dombroski, PhD, founder and clinical director at orthotic and footwear company SoleScience. Some brands, including Amberjack, Cole Haan and Allen Edmonds offer shoes in wide sizes if you find traditional sizes to be too narrow. In general, a rounded toe is more comfortable as opposed to pointed styles.

Insole Material

Pay attention to the shoe’s insole, the thin layer that has direct contact with your foot. Common insole materials include foam, leather and cork: Foam is an excellent all-around option for cushioning and pressure relief, leather is particularly good at molding to your foot’s shape and cork is known for its supportive qualities.

Outsole And Midsole Material

Dress shoe outsoles, which are the very bottom of the shoe that touches the ground, are made of either leather or rubber. While leather has a bit of give to it, rubber is much more flexible and springy, which is kinder to feet in the long run. Dombroski advises to “avoid outsoles that are too soft as they break down quickly, and can offer less grip.” In addition, Dombroski recommends styles with thicker midsoles, similar to the ones you’d find in running shoes. (To clarify, the midsole is between the outsole and insole.) “They offer cushioning and comfort for professions that are on their feet for long days, as opposed to harder leather soled shoes,” he says. However, Dombroski notes that these kinds of dress shoes can read a little more casual than traditional styles.

Upper Material

The “upper” is the part of the dress shoe that covers your foot. Dress shoe uppers are typically made from leather, suede or knit material, with leather being the most popular. Leather has a smooth surface and tends to be more durable than suede, which has a soft and supple feel. Knit material, on the other hand, is the most breathable and lightweight option, but it doesn’t look as formal as leather or suede.

Laces Vs. Slip-On

Traditional dress shoes have laces, which not only contribute to their sophisticated appearance, but also allow for a more customized fit. Meanwhile, some dress sneakers, loafers and boots are designed without laces. These lace-free styles can be slipped on and off, which adds to their convenience; however, they may not be formal enough for certain settings, like weddings or business meetings.
