The Bear mattress brand is not only a favorite among Forbes Vetted team members, but it’s also a go-to for a growing list of professional athletes because of its enhanced feature upgrades that, according to the brand, help aid in muscle recovery and boost sleep quality. The Bear Original Mattress is Bear’s flagship offering, which our 11 testers found to be dense, firm and ideal for spinal alignment in specific sleeping positions. Our review details our findings from a range of different sleepers, from petite side sleepers to back and stomach sleepers over 250 pounds.

Mattresses aren’t typically made to fit every body and sleep posture, and that rings true with the Bear Original Mattress. With that said, our testers found this bed to be a comfortable, firmer memory foam choice that keeps your spine lifted—appealing to those who prefer elevated support. Ahead is a breakdown of Bear’s flagship mattress, along with our testers’ insights into how it performed in key categories such as motion isolation, pressure relief and ease of movement.

Our Initial Thoughts On The Bear Original Mattress

One of the Bear Original Mattress’ greatest appeals is its wallet-friendly price, as a queen size retails for under $900—and it’s often on sale for a few hundred dollars less. For those who have a preference for firmer beds or need additional support, we think this is a good budget option for you.

“The Bear Original feels sturdy and supportive at first glance,” says Forbes Vetted mattress updates writer Alex Garrett. “When I press my hand into the bed, it doesn’t sink as far as some of the other memory foam mattresses I tested. Instead, it provides a nice lifted feel.” Another tester called it the firmest mattress they tested compared to several others, so there’s no getting around its extra-dense feel. While a firm feel isn’t for everybody, we did find that it’s ideal for those who favor their stomach or back because of its ability to promote spinal alignment.

Bear Original Mattress Construction, Firmness And Feel

Three Layers Provide Dense Memory Foam Comfort

Here’s a look beneath the surface of the 10-inch Bear Original Mattress. With a low price tag comes a standard build and simple features, but you can upgrade to a special Celliant-infused cover that helps boost recovery and sleep quality by increasing blood flow and , according to the brand and .

  • Cover: The bed comes with a breathable knit cover or a Celliant-infused cover for an additional $300.
  • Comfort layer: A gel-infused memory foam layer that contours under your curves and helps regulate temperature.
  • Transition layer: A slab of “Bear Dynamic Foam” is sandwiched in the middle which helps neutralize the dense foam below and provide extra pressure relief.
  • Support layer: An extra-dense layer of foam sits at the base to provide stability, durability and support.

Enjoy A Medium-Firm To Firm Profile

The brand says the Bear Original falls around a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest), but our testers feel it’s even more solid. Most of our testers rated the mattress between a 7 to 8.5, as one says, “I feel like the actual firmness of this mattress is slightly higher than its rating. It definitely is a firm mattress.”

As far as feel goes, our testers agree that it has a dense and lifted profile. “I wouldn’t say it’s cushiony or plushy. Instead, it feels pretty supportive all around,” says one tester. “The mattress feels pretty firm and there isn’t much of a sinking feeling—it's very subtle,” adds another.

One of our testers who slept on the Bear Original at home says, “This is one of those mattresses that you have to sleep on for at least 30 days to really know how it feels." She adds that it softened a little over time from the initial extra-firm feel, but it never became comfortable for side sleeping.

As a result, we primarily recommend this mattress to back and stomach sleepers. For those who want a softer mattress (like side sleepers), consider the that accommodates most sleeping positions due to its multiple firmness options or see our list of editor-approved soft mattresses.

Bear Original Mattress Features

A Look Into Its Upgraded Cover Features

The standard quilted cover on the Bear Original is designed to be soft and breathable, but athletes and highly active individuals may be interested in upgrading to the Celliant-infused cover. The Celliant products meet criteria as medical devices and general wellness products, and according to Bear, Celliant can help boost circulation and sleep quality and aid in muscle recovery.

Pressure Relief

An important characteristic for every sleep position—especially side sleepers—the Bear Original provides the best pressure relief to back and stomach sleepers along the spine. Because of its firmer profile, it pushes against the hips and joints of a side sleeper, which makes it a bit too firm for this sleep posture. “I notice pressure buildup in my shoulder blades and slightly around the hip. It’s very firm for a medium-firm mattress and not so ideal for side sleepers,” says one tester. Another adds, “There’s a bit too much resistance to be comfortable in this posture.”

Cooling

The cover is made to be breathable and one foam layer has gel infusions, but we wouldn’t call this a cooling bed. Our tester who tried the Bear Original Mattress in her own home for more than a month calls it temperature neutral. “Bear claims the cooling gel memory foam in its Original provides temperature regulation for hot sleepers,” she says. “While I wouldn’t call myself a hot sleeper, I wouldn’t call this a cooling mattress either.” Our testers echo the same experience, and say it was neither hot nor cooling. For a true cooling mattress, consider the best mattresses for hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer

Solo sleepers aren’t as worried about this metric, but those who share a bed might appreciate the Bear’s ability to deaden movement across a mattress, which minimizes disturbances by your partner’s movements. Our testers placed a water glass near the edge of the mattress and made sporadic movements around it to see how much the water wobbled. Memory foam beds are known for their ability to stop movement, and Garrett says, “Like many of the other memory foam mattresses I tested today, motion isolation is solid." She rated it an 8 out of 10, adding, “The water in the glass wiggles a little bit, but it’s nothing too noticeable.”

Our long-term tester also says “the mattress did its job” absorbing movement from her partner and two pets. “I am impressed by this mattress’ motion isolation, and I think it’s a good choice for people who don’t want to be disturbed by a partner’s movements,” she says.

Support

The all-foam Bear Original Mattress isn’t as supportive as a hybrid mattress that’s built with steel coils in the base, but it does offer better lift and sturdiness than soft all-foam mattresses because of its supportive, firmer profile. We also found that edge support is one of its strongest features, which is a benefit to couples who share a queen- or full-size mattress since it can make the bed feel larger. “Edge support is one area where this bed shines,” says one tester. “Support does not waver from edge to edge.” Another tester had a similar experience and says, “The edge of the mattress remains extremely firm and supportive even while sitting on it. I don’t experience any sliding or movement when bending down.”

The Bear Original doesn’t have a maximum weight capacity listed, but we would primarily recommend this bed to those who weigh under 250 pounds. Those with a plus-size body type should consider a more supportive choice made with steel coils that provides more durability and longevity.

Ease Of Movement

Some memory foam beds can make it difficult to switch positions because the foam is slow to respond to pressure, causing a kind of “resistance” as you move from one posture to another. For those who prefer better ease of movement, rest easy knowing that our long-term tester didn’t find this to be the case. “During my testing, I found it easy to switch positions without feeling stuck,” she says. Garrett and two other testers also rated this category a high 9 out of 10. “Because the Bear Original feels firmer than many of the memory foam mattresses I tested, it’s easier to move around on. I can change positions without using much muscle,” she says.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a no-frills mattress that offers good spinal support, comfort and is easy on your wallet, then the Bear Original is a great choice. We had 11 different body types and sleep postures test it and compare it to over 25 other top-rated beds, along with a long-term tester who slept on the mattress for over 30 nights in her own home. In the end, we found it’s an ideal option for back and stomach sleepers under 250 pounds in search of lift and support.

“For sleepers who like a medium-firm to firm bed, mainly sleep on their backs or stomachs and/or those who tend to move toward the edge of the bed during sleep, the Bear Original would be a good choice,” says one tester. This seems to be the sentiment among all of our testers, as another adds, “It’s a good option for memory foam fans seeking a sturdy and more supportive pick.” However, side sleepers and people who prefer a hybrid or softer mattress should consider another choice that’s more accommodating.

How We Tested

We first had a long-term tester try the Bear Original Mattress in her own home for over a month to see how the bed performs in real life. During that time, she took notes on comfort for each sleep posture, pressure relief, support, ease of movement, motion isolation and edge support. “I experimented with lying in different positions and sitting and lying on the edge for at least 15 minutes at a time,” our tester says. “My dog and cat, who also sleep in the bed, also tested the motion isolation by jumping up and down on the mattress.”

We also had 11 people try the Bear Original Mattress alongside more than 25 other mattresses. This way, we gained a better perspective on how it performs directly compared to its competitors and were able to collect insights from all types of preferences and sleep postures. Our group testers analyzed the same characteristics including firmness, feel, pressure relief, support, ease of movement, motion isolation and more.
