Real Christmas trees are nostalgic, but for something long-lasting, faux trees—which also require zero cleanup—could be worth the switch. But realism is just as important as upkeep and durability when choosing the best artificial Christmas tree for your home. To that end, our home team selected the National Tree Company Pre-Lit Downswept Douglas Fir as our top recommendation: One of our editors has been using this full-bodied tree since 2017, and she highlights its 900 dual-color LED bulbs. We’re also enthralled by the highly customizable Balsam Hill Classic Blue Spruce, a premium tree with over 2,900 tips, 10 height options and five lighting styles.
To find the best artificial Christmas trees in 2025, we focused on needle material, realism, ease of setup and lighting options.
ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTOS: RETAILERS
Our team spent hours researching (and in three cases, testing) the most popular artificial Christmas trees from trusted brands, focusing on key features like straightforward setup, height, lighting options and realism. (Pro tip: For the most natural-looking tree, go for polyethylene, also called PE, needles; if cost-effectiveness is more important, we recommend traditional PVC needles; many trees combine both.) If you’re ready to invest in a faux centerpiece, here are seven of the best artificial Christmas trees that’ll win over the skeptical “real tree only” crowd—and as a bonus, several of them are still steeply discounted for Cyber Week.

Designed with the brand’s proprietary technology, the tree’s branch tips are individually made, resulting in a full-bodied, realistic-looking tree that can support all your favorite ornaments. In addition to the 6.5-foot version featured above, National Tree Company also offers seven other variations on this tree in sizes ranging from 4 to 10 feet, plus options that are unlit or with dual color, multicolor, clear and warm white lights.
The pre-lit 6.5-foot versions come with 650 bulbs of your choice; one tester, who’s been using this tree every holiday season since 2017, prefers the dual-color LED bulbs because “we can switch between white lights and color lights with the tap of a button.” She adds that this tree is a cinch to set up and break down because the branches are hinged: “We stow it in its original box in the off-season.”

For those with little floor space to spare, this pre-lit tree from Puleo International measures just over 3 feet wide, allowing it to fit into tight spaces. (The 6.5-foot Balsam Hill tree above, for comparison, is 4.5 feet wide.) Made from fire-resistant PVC, the 6.5-foot model of this tree has 350 clear bulbs that adorn its fluffy branches. And those branches are hinged, so it doesn’t take long to get this tree ready to be displayed. “It’s super easy to set up,” says one tester. “The size I ordered is just three pieces plus the base—no tools required—so I was able to put it together myself pretty quickly.” Just note that, like most artificial trees, the branches require a good amount of fluffing. “As you fluff, it becomes nice and full for its size,” our tester adds. (If you’re a fan of the flocked look, this slim pick has a pre-lit, flocked version, too, for $161.)
Best Flocked Artificial Christmas Tree

What you’ll love:
Beautiful, heavily flocked branches create a realistic snowy look
Flocked Christmas trees are treated to look like they’ve been covered by an ultra-realistic dusting of fresh snow. For those drawn to this dreamy look, we named the King Of Christmas Queen Flock—which is full-bodied, thanks to its 2,817 branch tips—the best flocked Christmas tree due to its festive appearance. “This tree is truly stunning in person. It’s sturdy and well-made,” reports one of our testers.
Like many picks on this list, it’s available in several sizes (six in total, ranging from 6.5 feet to 12 feet), and you can either get it with warm white LED lights (800 bulbs total) or as an unlit tree. Plus, our tester reports, “it doesn’t shed at all—not even a speck came off while unboxing. As a thoughtful touch, it comes with gloves that go up to the elbow to protect you from being scratched while decorating the tree.”

Balsam Hill Balsam Fir Tabletop
Balsam Hill Balsam Fir Tabletop (2.5 Ft.)

Keep in mind:
Relatively expensive for a small tree
If you’re looking for a mini Christmas tree to place by your front door or on a console table near your entryway—or you live in a smaller space—this petite pick from Balsam Hill fits the bill. While it’s sold in four heights from 2.5 to 5.5 feet tall, the smallest tree is an adorable option, plus it features the same lifelike construction the brand’s trees are known for. It also comes with two lighting choices, either LED clear or LED clear fairy lights, with the latter being slightly more expensive (but we think they’re worth the extra cost). If you’re nervous about not being able to decorate this tree, don’t be—its branches can handle small ornaments of around 2 to 3 inches.
Best Pre-Lit Artificial Christmas Tree
A Generously Lit Tree That's Truly Quick-Setup—And Quickly Selling Out
The Home Depot
Home Decorators Collection Grand Duchess Twinkling Balsam Fir (7.5 Ft.)
Needle material: PE and PVC | Height options: 4 total, from 7.5 to 15 feet | Width: 58 inches (ranges up to 76 inches) | Number of tips: 3,271 | Light options: LED micro fairy (9 settings) | Warranty: 3 years
What you’ll love:
“Quick Set” technology allows setup to take just a few minutes
Lights have 9 settings, including the popular “twinkling warm white”
The most branch tips of all our options, giving it a full, realistic look
Keep in mind:
Only the 7.5- and 15-foot versions are currently available
While the other recommendations on this list come with pre-lit versions, The Home Depot’s immensely popular Grand Duchess is our pick in this category because of how dense and multi-functional its lights are. For starters, its LED micro fairy lights have nine settings, from dimmable to steady warm white to the crowd-favorite twinkling warm white. It also has a gorgeous, full shape thanks to its balanced mix of over 3,200 PE and PVC branches.
Further, its unique Quick Set setup technology and “memory wire” branches greatly simplify setup and prep. Quick Setup refers to how the lights connect automatically as you stack each of the tree’s three sections, and because the power cord runs through the trunk, all you’ll need to do is plug it in once to turn them all on. Meanwhile, memory wire branches mean the metal in them was manufactured with their tension “pre-set” in their packaging; when you take them out of their compressed state, the branches spring outward and into their set shape—minimizing fluffing or doing away with it altogether.
How We Chose The Best Artificial Christmas Trees
To determine the best artificial Christmas trees, our team looked into the most popular and highest-rated options, compared the most desired features, consulted industry experts and tested three of our top picks.
Product Selection And Criteria
Research: Our home and kitchen editorial team sought out best-selling, high-quality trees from trusted brands like Balsam Hill, Puleo International, King of Christmas and more.
Variety: We made sure to include a wide ranging selection of trees, including unique sizes, features, lighting options and price points.
Specifications: We looked into the specifications of each tree, prioritizing expert-recommended heights, materials, value and ease of setup.
Consumer Insights And Staff Testing
Customer reviews: We dug into consumer reviews, ensuring every option on this list has a minimal average rating of 4 stars or higher. If we came across negative reviews, we looked into the claims made by the consumer and whether it was a common issue.
To ensure you pick out the right tree for your space, you need to keep a few things in mind: whether you want a pre-lit option, how tall and wide you want your tree to be, how easy it is to setup and break down, how strong its branches are and, of course, how much you’re willing to spend. But the most important requirement, in our opinion, is realism. We drill down into these factors:
Realism
The material and quality of the needles that make up a faux tree’s branches are key to how realistic it ends up looking and how durable it is. These needles are most commonly made with plastic—specifically, either polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or both. These material types each have their benefits:
PE needles: Needles made with PE are specially molded to more closely mimic the texture of real evergreen needles, so they tend to look more realistic than ones made with PVC; they also tend to be higher-quality than PVC needles, which makes them more durable—but also more expensive.
PVC needles: Traditional PVC needles, on the other hand, are fire-resistant and less likely to fade under sun exposure, but because they’re cut out of flat sheets of PVC, they appear less textured and lifelike than PE needles. That said, they tend to cost significantly less than trees with PE needles.
PE and PVC needles: Many of the best artificial trees, according to interior designer Jan Odesanya, consist of a hybrid of PE and PVC needles. Typically, these trees use the more textured, realistic PE needles for the outer branches (which are both more visible and will hold most of the ornaments), while the flatter PVC needles are saved for the inner branches because they’ll be less visible once the tree is decorated. These types of faux trees—such as our favorites from Balsam Hill and The Home Depot’s Home Decorators Collection, are reliable investments.
Size
Most people tend to be happy with Christmas trees that measure between 7 and 7.5 feet tall, but the right size for you depends on where you plan to situate it and how much space you’re working with. It’s smart to take measurements of where you’ll want to display your tree before making a purchase decision.
In general, you want to have at least 1 foot of clearance between the top of your tree and your ceiling, leaving you room for a tree topper. And height isn’t the only measurement worth paying attention to: “You should consider not only the height of the tree for your space, but also the width,” says Olivia Riordan, senior account manager for retail sales and design at American Christmas. “You don’t want to end up like the Griswold Family Christmas tree.” Try to leave about 1 foot of clearance around the widest part of the tree.
Lights
Some artificial Christmas trees are pre-lit, which can be a nice perk if you’re looking for something that’s pretty much ready to go out of the box. And within the pre-lit category, there’s a decent amount of variety: Some trees have lights built into the branches, while others are wrapped around in a more traditional fashion. The lights can also be clear or colored (oroffer special effects, like sparkling ones). And if you’d rather use your own lights, no sweat—there are plenty of options available that are unlit as well.
To supplement our research, we consulted two Christmas décor experts: Olivia Riordan, the senior account manager for retail sales and design at American Christmas, a professional decorating company located in Mount Vernon, New York; and Jan Odesanya, principal interior designer and founder of Mondan & Co Interiors, a Canada-based design company.
We regularly update this story to check for accuracy and relevance. This article was last refreshed in December 2025 by home updates writer Fran Sales, who’s covered a wide range of home décor and holiday topics—from reading chairs to gift baskets to flower delivery services.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Jan Odesanya, principal interior designer and founder of Mondan & Co Interiors, recommends choosing versions with multiple needle types for texture (a blend of PVC and PE branches, for instance), natural color variation that includes shades of brown, strong branches that can easily hold heavy ornaments and hinged branches rather than the hook-on variety. Our top recommendations that fit these criteria come from Balsam Hill and King Of Christmas, among other brands.
For starters, Odesanya suggests taking the time to fluff each branch: “Pull it apart, twist the needles, angle it thoughtfully, then come back and adjust once you see the whole shape.” Next, securely weave or tuck in accessories like quality faux florals and thick silk or velvet ribbons throughout the tree instead of just propping them on the branches. If your artificial tree isn’t pre-lit, make sure to use a minimum of 150 lights in various sizes to create depth and drama. If you go for a flocked artificial tree, choose a higher-quality model with realistic snow dust: “The budget versions tend to look heavy-handed. Good flocking catches light beautifully,” she says.
You can pay between $100 and over $1,000 for the most realistic artificial Christmas trees, but if specific features are important to you, it’s worth investing more because it’ll pay for itself over time. “A disappointing artificial tree is worse than no tree at all,” Odesanya says. “If it lasts 10 years, you’re looking at less than $100 per season for something that makes you happy every time you look at it.” If you’re looking for something larger than the average 6- to 8-foot tree, want something hyper-realistic with over 2,000 branch tips, and you want extra features like storage bags and several lighting options, expect to pay a premium.
