A full night’s sleep is an uphill battle when you’re kicking the covers off every few hours to stay cool or waking up covered in sweat. If this sounds like you—especially as summer draws near—you might want to consider a cooling mattress if you’re in the market for a new bed. Our editors led a group of 30 panelists, a majority of whom self-described as hot sleepers, in testing some of the most popular mattresses that claim to have cooling properties. After sorting out the winners from the duds and sending mattresses home with long-term testers, we named the the best cooling mattress overall: Not only does it have a detectably cool cover, but it’s also designed with phase-change material to dissipate body heat and cooling gel to provide even greater comfort.
Editor’s note: The DreamCloud Premier Rest, our pick for the best cooling mattress for couples, has been upgraded and renamed the DreamCloud Luxe.
Why We Named It Best Overall
Out of all of the cooling mattresses that we’ve tested, there are none quite as impressive as the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling. While most cooling mattresses contain at least one—and in some cases, two—active cooling features, the newly designed Aurora Luxe Cooling contains three, which take up a majority of the bed. As one of our favorite hybrid mattresses, combining coils with cooling gel- and mineral-infused comfort layers, its construction draws body heat away while allowing for airflow. Its cover also features cooling fibers, resulting in a cool-to-the-touch sensation.
Who It’s Best For
The Aurora comes in multiple firmness options (soft, medium and firm), making it a good fit for all sleep positions. We recommend the softer model for strict side sleepers or anyone in need of a little extra cushioning, since it contours and cradles your pressure points. Back or stomach sleepers who are after extra support might opt for the medium or firm models. Consider the pillow-top upgrade (an additional $300) for a plusher, more cushioned feel on any model; it’s especially beneficial for side sleepers or people with joint pain. The enhancement is also designed with ThermoPhase foam, a material that contributes to the bed’s ability to regulate temperature. Senior mattress and sleep editor Bridget Chapman, who switches between her side and back, says, “I felt comfortable in both positions on the medium mattress with the added pillow top (especially back sleeping).”
How It Performed During Testing
Chapman slept on the medium pillow-top Aurora Luxe Cooling for several months and says she was impressed by its ability to prevent her from overheating. As for overall comfort, five different members of our team tested the firm model of the Aurora Luxe Cooling with the added pillow top and concluded that it’s a good choice for a variety of sleeping positions: Overall, we scored it an 8 out of 10 for side sleepers, a 9.5 for back sleepers and an 8.5 for stomach sleepers.
Note that we’ve also tested the new from Brooklyn Bedding, and I could immediately feel a cooling sensation through my clothes while lying down on the base model. After discounts, the base model costs around $200 more than the Aurora Luxe Cooling. As for the ThermoBalance Elite mattress, home and kitchen editor Monica Petrucci adds, “It's cool to the touch without being aggressively icy, cutting through clothing.”

Why We Named It Best For Side Sleepers
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a favorite among our team; its plush pillow top and three dense memory foam layers earned it the top spot in our roundup of the best mattresses of 2026. For hot sleepers, it contains a foam layer with a cooling copper infusion; the coils promote airflow; and the pillow top is made from a breathable Tencel material. For $249 more, you can upgrade the pillow top to the cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex cover, which we found worth the price. Or, for $499, you can add both the cooling cover and an extra heat transfer layer.
Who It’s Best For
You can’t choose from different firmness levels like other hybrids on this list, but we don’t think you need to: Its balanced, medium-firm feel can accommodate side, back and lightweight stomach sleepers. While side sleeping, one tester says it provides a “great mix of comfort and support for the whole body,” and another adds they could lie in bed on their back all day. For side sleepers, a tester says it helped with “pressure relief on my shoulders and my spouse’s hips.” If you suffer from back pain, you can upgrade to a support layer for $249, which in our experience noticeably lifted the lower back.
How It Performed During Testing
We found that the Midnight Luxe’s comfort layers excelled at cradling the shoulders and hips, while its coils helped testers maintain a neutral spine position. “I love that this bed has some cushion, yet it’s still supportive,” says one tester. “My spine feels aligned and there’s no discomfort.” In her Helix Midnight Luxe review, tester and updates writer Alexandra Garrett, who’s slept on this bed in her home for over two years, says the added GlacioTex cover is “comfortable, supportive and so cool”—though we wish this mattress came with a cooling cover by default. Comparatively, the is designed with the cooling cover included, no upgrade required, and at a lower cost.

Why We Named It Best For Back Pain
The Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid has a dual-coil construction, which makes it one of the more unique cooling mattresses on the market—and also one of the most supportive, a crucial feature for people with back pain. We also like that the Chill falls somewhere between a 5 and a 7 on the firmness scale, giving it a slightly firmer feel than a true medium mattress, an accommodating level for people with back pain. It also proved superior in performance features for couples (more on this below).
Who It’s Best For
Mattress and sleep editor McKenzie Dillon says, “It’s one of my favorites”—as did half the testers who tried it compared to 24 other beds. Because of its medium to medium-firm sturdy profile, it appeals to back and stomach sleepers seeking spinal support, but it also cushions the joints of side sleepers for ample comfort and spinal alignment. It’s a suitable option for couples as well, thanks to its strong performance in motion isolation and edge support. Note that the is more viable for those who want a choice in firmness or need a supportive cooling mattress at a more affordable price.
How It Performed During Testing
We found the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid excelled at maintaining spinal alignment and preventing pressure from accumulating around the lower back. “Combined with its comfortable foam layers and fluffy pillow top, it’s an ultra-supportive and plush bed that makes you look forward to lying down,” says Dillon. Outside of its exceptional support, it also wowed us in the cooling department: Its cooling cover and gel-infused foam, plus ample airflow from the coil base, all work together to ward off night sweats. You can also expect good motion isolation and edge support from this bed—our panelists scored both categories an 8.5 out of 10.

Why We Named It Best Value
True cooling mattresses are often pricier than standard beds due to their mixed-material construction, which often includes proprietary cooling technology. However, that’s not to say you can’t find a quality cooling bed at a more reasonable price. The Nectar Luxe Hybrid is our recommendation for those looking to make their dollars stretch. It’s your standard hybrid mattress—a coil base combined with layers of memory foam—but it has a cover that contains cooling fibers, which several testers say give it a chilly surface feel.
Who It’s Best For
We found the Nectar Luxe to be softer than advertised, making it most ideal for back and side sleepers who need strong pressure relief and balanced support. However, it’s too soft for stomach sleepers weighing over 150 pounds, as they need more support beneath their hips. We recommend the for these sleepers instead, as it has a true medium-firm feel. If you’re willing to splurge more for temperature relief, the offered a stronger cooling sensation in our experience, while still offering a medium feel for back and side sleepers.
How It Performed During Testing
While hybrid mattresses are more breathable, and thus cooler than most all-foam beds, they tend to underperform at motion isolation, whereas memory foam beds excel. However, that wasn’t the case with the Luxe Hybrid: Our testers scored its motion isolation an 8 out of 10. That makes it great for couples who sleep hot and are also looking for a mattress that stifles movements from one side of the bed to the other. While we wouldn’t classify the Luxe Hybrid as one of the best luxury mattresses, we do think it offers accommodating comfort for multiple sleeping positions, and its cooling cover is a nice finish that we usually only see with pricier beds.
Why We Named It Best For Couples
If you share the bed with a partner, you know having double the body heat can make the mattress extra warm, so cooling mattresses are a great option. Formerly known as the DreamCloud Premier Rest, the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid offers a medium-soft to medium feel that excels in a number of areas including cooling, support for multiple sleep postures, motion isolation and pressure relief.
Who It’s Best For
Because the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid is plusher while still offering a sturdy construction, it’s most supportive and pressure-relieving for back and side sleepers. These sleep postures should find it targets aches and pains along the joints. However, back sleepers over 250 pounds should consider a firmer option for more support, as one of our 250-pound-plus testers says, “I can see many people loving this one, but it’s just too soft for me.” Stomach sleepers, especially those over 250 pounds, should also consider a firmer mattress for better support.
How It Performed During Testing
We enjoyed sinking into the bed’s plush Euro top, which features stitched-in foam and cooling fibers. The Luxe Hybrid has five main layers, including coils and both memory foam and zoned foams for targeted support. We found that the combination offered deep pressure relief and impressive temperature regulation. It also tested well for isolating motion, earning an 8 out of 10 from our testers. “Motion isolation is one of this bed’s strongest features,” says Dillon. However, it didn’t score as well for edge support, with testers noting sinkage while sitting along the perimeter, so keep that in mind if you’re sharing a smaller mattress size with your partner.

Why We Named It Best Organic
Latex is known for being durable, temperature regulating and eco-friendly, but it’s typically firmer than regular memory foam. The Avocado Green has all the performance strengths of latex but is available in three firmness levels to accommodate different sleep postures (we tested each one). Its breathable design, which includes perforated latex and coils, lets air pass through freely and prevents heat retention. Plus, it has layers of naturally sourced Talalay latex and certified organic Dunlop latex, paired with organic wool and cotton.
Who It’s Best For
The firm model is best for back and stomach sleepers, while side and combination sleepers should consider the softer profiles for better pressure relief. “The mattress contours to my body, and I feel very supported and cozy,” says one panelist while side sleeping on the plush model. People who switch between postures, on the other hand, may prefer the medium option since it offers a more balanced feel. Although you get to choose from three firmness levels, our biggest gripe is the price of the pillow-top upgrades. They start at $560 for the medium option and over $1,000 for the plusher box-top model.
How It Performed During Testing
After testing the firm model, Chapman says, “The organic materials promote airflow that helps with cooling.” Our long-term tester agrees, saying that heat dissipated quickly after she switched positions and that she slept temperature-neutral through the whole night. The Avocado Green also proved to be incredibly supportive during testing: “I feel like I am in a healthy alignment, and as someone who has lower back pain concerns, I don’t feel any pinching or sinkage that could trigger that discomfort,” notes one tester. It’s also easy to move around on, which makes it effortless to change sleep positions, and scored an 8.5 out of 10 in this category.

Why We Named It Best Luxury
The Sleep Number ClimateCool is a feature-rich smart bed with plenty of upgrades for hot sleepers and couples: dual-climate controls, adjustable firmness on each side of the bed, built-in sleep tracking and an optional smart adjustable base upgrade. With all of the high-tech extras, this is one of the coolest beds you can get (both literally and figuratively). Rather than blowing cool air, its temperature control system pulls body heat away, which Dillon says leaves her skin feeling physically cold to the touch.
Who It’s Best For
In addition to hot sleepers, couples can especially benefit from its myriad of features, as each person has the ability to personalize their side of the bed to their liking. You can individually adjust firmness levels according to your sleep posture, from very soft to extremely firm, and adjust your side’s cooling by up to 15 degrees. The ClimateCool’s also ideal if you’re interested in sleep tracking. It provides insights on heart rate, sleep disruptions and sleep cycles via the Sleep Number app, curating a score each morning based on your nightly stats.
How It Performed During Testing
If you want one of the most customizable mattresses available, the Sleep Number ClimateCool is one of the coolest beds we’ve tested and among the most advanced and intuitive. “My husband and I have both seen a huge improvement in how hot we sleep,” Dillon writes in her ClimateCool review, adding, “For the first time, I’ve woken up feeling too cold at night and had to turn down the setting.” However, she says the mattress doesn’t have as strong of edge support as competing beds and recommends a king or California king size to couples. If you’d like to customize both cooling and heat, consider the .

Why We Named It Best Hybrid
The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid features some of the most advanced cooling tech on the market without being a smart bed. Its outer layers consist of a cooling cover made with temperature-regulating fibers, and beneath is a “Ghost Ice” layer, which is made of phase change material that absorbs and dissipates body heat. It also contains multiple cooling layers of gel- and graphite-infused foams, which help pull heat away from your body, and coils that enhance airflow.
Who It’s Best For
The GhostBed Luxe has a medium-firm profile, which we found offers a just-right level of comfort for most sleeping positions. “There’s a good mix of cushioning and sinkage that keeps my hip and shoulder comfortable,” says one tester while lying on their side. Its responsive nature also makes it a good pick for combination sleepers, as there’s no resistance when you switch positions. Stomach sleepers, especially those looking for sturdier support, should look for a firmer mattress like the below.
How It Performed During Testing
Several testers noticed the Ghostbed Luxe’s cool-to-the-touch cover, and one mentioned she didn’t feel the cover increase in warmth underneath her during the testing process. “Along with being a stellar cooling pick, I found the GhostBed Luxe offers exceptional pressure relief for back and side sleeping,” adds Chapman, who rated it a perfect 10 for both sleeping positions. The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid also proved strong in pressure relief for all sleeping positions (side, back and stomach). And although it contains memory foam, we found it has very good ease of movement, which our panelists rated an 8.5 out of 10.
Why We Named It Best Firm
Firm mattresses offer more support and durability, which also means they’re less likely to trap heat, since there’s zero sink-in sensation and you sleep more “on top” of the mattress (unlike plusher beds). The Tempur-Breeze LuxeBreeze features advanced cooling technology and comes in three firmness levels, with the firm model offering the sturdiest support and the coolest feel.
Who It’s Best For
Side sleepers should consider the soft model; back sleepers may prefer the medium or firm; and stomach sleepers should go with the firm model. Just remember, softer versions may feel warmer where they contour to your body. The LuxeBreeze also has a prominent memory foam feel. It contains a layer of the brand’s signature Tempur-Material, which is essentially a denser, more pressure-relieving version of memory foam, along with a plethora of cooling materials. So it doesn’t retain temperature like traditional memory foam, but you can expect a nestling feel.
How It Performed During Testing
All eight of our testers called attention to the Tempur-Breeze LuxeBreeze’s cooling cover. “The top feels a lot cooler than the other mattresses I’ve tried,” says one tester, who adds, “As a hot sleeper, I can see myself being extremely happy sleeping on this all night.” Every layer that follows the top cover is specifically engineered to draw heat away from the body. It also excels at motion isolation, with half our testers giving it a 10 out of 10; the mattress completely deadened movement during our water glass trial (where we make movements around a glass of water and observe the impact). It is a luxury pick, but if you want pressure-relieving support and sleep hot, we think it’s worth the investment.

Why We Named It Best For Switching Between Back And Side
The Casper Snow is among a handful of beds that is soft enough to cradle the hips and shoulders of a side sleeper but supportive enough to prevent the spine from sagging while back or stomach sleeping—so you’re comfortable in each position. And although it’s made with memory foam, it bounces back to its regular shape quickly, meaning you don’t feel “stuck” when you attempt to change your posture.
Who It’s Best For
With a medium profile, the Casper Snow Mattress is most suitable for back, side and some stomach sleepers. The majority of our panelists agree on its versatile comfort, and it earned high scores across all sleeping positions. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper who weighs over 250 pounds, we would recommend a firmer mattress, like the , for more lift beneath the hips. Because of its widely accommodating firmness level, the Casper Snow is also a great choice for couples with different sleep preferences who need a comfortable middle ground.
How It Performed During Testing
The Casper Snow scored the highest for back sleepers, earning a 9.5 out of 10 in comparison to the other sleep postures that each scored a 9 out of 10. “Because of the sinking-in, doughy feel of this material, it really conforms to your body’s contours,” says one tester under 150 pounds. Its best scoring feature was motion isolation, which received a majority 10 out of 10s, an impressive feat for a hybrid mattress with springy steel coils. Edge support also proved strong, so couples can appreciate the way it absorbs movement and the strength of the perimeter if they’re sleeping near the edge.
Why We Named It Best Soft
If you’ve never tried a Purple bed, it’s unlike anything else you’ve likely slept on before—but the brand has a cult-like following for a reason. According to our long-term tester, three things immediately stood out: how soft (but not too soft) and cushiony it was; the sensation of being cradled by the bed’s supportive materials and its cooling feel. “I am admittedly not a hot sleeper, but my husband is,” says managing editor Emmy Favilla. “Since testing this bed, he’s yet to wake up in a sweat, as he often did with our old mattress.” For hot sleepers, the gel-like design of Purple’s proprietary Gel-Flex Grid excels at regulating temperature and doesn’t retain heat like regular foams. It also ensures there’s plenty of airflow.
If you’re hesitant to purchase the Purple before trying in-person, consider ordering a $10 or falling back on its 100-night trial.
Who It’s Best For
As a back sleeper primarily, Favilla says she never felt any pressure build up around her joints while sleeping supine. “My husband, who has occasional shoulder pain and also alternates between sleeping on his side and back, agreed as well.” The bed features a three-zone pocketed coil support system, which provides targeted pressure relief for your hips and shoulders and support under the lumbar region. But due to its softer profile, we don’t recommend the Purple RestorePlus to stomach sleepers. Our tester found that it doesn’t keep the spine bolstered enough for healthy sleep posture in that position, which can manifest as lower back pain. Back sleepers over 250 pounds may also prefer a firmer choice with stronger support.
How It Performed During Testing
Rather than sinking into the material’s layers like you would on memory foam, we found the Purple RestorePlus keeps you lifted while gently cradling your pressure points, despite its medium-soft profile. “While sleeping, I felt ‘in’ the bed more so than ‘on’ it, a sensation that I prefer,” says Favilla, which also helps contribute to its cooler profile. And while the mattress has a more responsive feel, Favilla says it isolates motion well enough so she isn’t disturbed by her partner with a different sleep schedule or two sizable dogs. See more in our full Purple RestorePlus Mattress review.
Other Cooling Mattresses We’ve Tested
To arrive at this list of winners, we tested 24 contenders alongside a panel. While the picks below didn’t quite reach the top of our list, they still earned high marks for support, cooling, and comfort, making them great alternatives for certain needs and preferences.
- Best For Back Pain Runner-Up: : (Forbes Vetted score: 4.75 out of 5): During testing, this bed stood out as a great fit for sleepers with back pain. (In fact, the Saatva won the title of best overall in our guide to the best mattresses for back pain.) However, we found that all three firmness levels of this bed—soft, luxury firm and firm—have a neutral temperature that isn’t as cooling as the .
- Best Luxury Runner-Up: : (Forbes Vetted score: 4.8 out of 5): Our executive editor, Dave Johnson, slept on this mattress for over a month, and he praised its performance in nearly every category, from its pressure-relieving abilities to its cooling prowess. That said, the Purple RestorePremier Hybrid doesn’t feel quite the same as a traditional bed. Its unique grid-like structure gives it a spongy feel that some sleepers may find off-putting. Also, the offers more customizations, a hallmark of a true luxury mattress.
- Best For Side Sleepers Runner-Up: : (Forbes Vetted score: 4.5 out of 5): The Nolah Evolution has a supportive coil base and thick foam layers that help ease the pressure buildup side sleepers feel around their shoulders and hips; our testers say they felt cradled by the bed while in this position. However, we found that the offers a similar amount of pressure relief with better cooling abilities.
- Best Hybrid Runner-Up: : (Forbes Vetted score: 4.25 out of 5): The ThermoBalance Elite is one of the newest mattresses in Brooklyn Bedding’s product lineup. Positioned as a premier model that’s loaded with features, it comes with a special cooling cover, phase-change foam and other advanced materials that help regulate temperature. It’s also available in three firmness levels to appease most sleep postures.
How We Tested The Best Cooling Mattresses
To identify the best cooling mattresses, we started by considering our sleep team’s extensive mattress-testing background, which includes over 200 beds. From there, we compiled an initial list of contenders to test.
Process
- Research: We identified 24 models from reputable brands that contain cooling features and have breathable constructions.
- Panel testing: We collected data from a group of 23 mattress testers who ranged in body type, sleep position and comfort preferences.
- Long-term testing: Testers took the mattress home and analyzed how its temperature regulation held up over at least a month of sleeping.
Criteria
- Construction: We considered the presence of innerspring coils and number of memory foam layers. Coils leave room for air to flow, while memory foam tends to trap more heat. Most of our contenders were either hybrid or innerspring mattresses, although we made exceptions if an all-foam mattress contained specific cooling features.
- Cooling features: We looked for active cooling features, such as a cooling cover, phase change material and gel- or copper-infused foam. A mattress didn’t need to have all of these cooling additions to make our list, but it did need to contain at least one active cooling feature.
- Temperature regulation: We considered how effective the mattress’ construction and cooling features were at keeping us cool. We evaluated whether the mattress cover felt cool to the touch and if that sensation lasted over several nights of rest or multiple rounds of testing.
What To Consider When Buying A Cooling Mattress
Since waking up hot is a common issue, many mattress brands have worked to redesign their beds for increased breathability and temperature regulation. Here’s what you should look for when buying a cooling mattress.
How To Determine If A Mattress Sleeps Cool
- Materials: Check the mattress for cooling materials, such as gel-infused foams, and copper or graphite additions. These materials help draw heat away from your body for a more comfortable (and cool) rest. You can also look out for other phase change materials (PCM) in the mattress cover that create a cool-to-the-touch feel—as seen in the Brooklyn Bedding’s GlacioTex cooling cover, for example.
- Mattress type: Mattresses come in four main constructions: hybrid, innerspring, latex and memory foam. When prioritizing temperature regulation, look for mattresses with air channels, like hybrid or innerspring beds, and mattresses made with perforated latex. They’re naturally more cooling and breathable than memory foam beds. If you sleep hot but love the feel of an all-foam bed, check for the cooling materials mentioned above, which can help break up heat retention.
Other Factors To Consider
- Sleeping position: Keep your go-to sleeping position in mind when choosing a mattress. Side sleepers need a soft bed with ample pressure relief to cushion the hips and shoulders, while stomach sleepers need a firm option that prevents the hips from sinking into the bed—throwing the spine out of alignment as a result. Back sleepers and combination sleepers, or people who switch between positions, generally feel best on a medium-firm bed that offers a balance of support for the spine and pressure relief for the joints.
- Body type: Larger people may sink into softer mattresses—which can lead to excess heat. In general, the more you weigh, the softer a bed feels. If you have a larger body, you may want to consider a mattress that’s on the firmer side to help prevent this. Many of the best mattresses for heavy people are made to accommodate more weight, while including many built-in cooling features.
- Firmness level: Firmness can also play a role in how warm or cool a bed feels. The softer a bed is, the more you sink into it, which means your body retains more heat. Firmer beds, by contrast, tend to feel cooler since you’re on top of the mattress, not in it. Medium-firm picks can hit the sweet spot of both for a comfortable, supportive feel.
Who Should Consider A Cooling Mattress
Hot sleepers are the primary target for a cooling mattress, though they aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a more breathable bed. We recommend cooling mattresses to the following groups:
- True hot sleepers: If you regularly feel overheated at night, you likely run warm. A cooling mattress can help pull heat away from your body instead of trapping it near you, which allows you to sleep more comfortably with fewer nighttime disturbances.
- Couples: Two people produce twice the body heat; a cooling mattress helps manage the extra warmth, so the bed doesn’t get too hot.
- Heavyweight sleepers: Big and tall sleepers typically run warmer, making these folks another ideal candidate for a cooling bed.
