An extra-firm mattress can be comfortable, but not all of them deliver on that promise. As a professional mattress tester, I've researched and tested hundreds of firm to extra-firm mattresses to find the ones that provide the best balance of support and comfort. My top choice for the best extra-firm mattress overall is the due to the flexibility of its flippable design, which is firm on one side and ultra-firm on the other. The best affordable choice based on my evaluation is the : For under $500, it offers lifted support that makes it easy to switch positions.
To select the best extra-firm mattress for various sleep needs and preferences, I carefully evaluated each bed based on its materials, firmness, which body types it can support (particularly average-weight sleepers or heavyweight individuals over 250 pounds) and how long its trial period is. Read on to learn more about the seven best extra-firm mattresses below, and why I selected them. Alternatively, check out my team’s recommendations for the best firm mattresses or best medium-firm mattresses if you suspect a softer feel is a better match for your body.
Why We Named It Best Overall
Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank Firm mattress is easily one of the firmest beds that I have tested, earning it a spot in Forbes Vetted’s Best Product Awards 2025. The beauty of the Plank Firm lies in its double-sided design, which lets you choose between an average firm feel and one that’s ultra firm; if one side feels too firm or too soft, flip it over for a noticeably different profile. The mattress is made with dense foam layers that keep you lifted and supported, including a 2-inch layer on the soft side for added contouring, and a quilted topper for the slightest touch of cushion on both sides.
How It Performed During Testing
I’ve tried the Plank Firm myself and thought my spine stayed in a straight alignment without sagging. I felt like the firmness helped open the space in between my shoulders, which provided a bit of pressure relief, kind of like when you lie on the ground and your back cracks because it’s all aligned. Since it’s made entirely with foam materials, we primarily recommend the Plank Firm for sleepers under 250 pounds. More specifically, it tested well for back and stomach sleeping, earning scores of 8.8 and 7.6 out of 10, respectively, during our testing. If you want ultra-firm support with the extra longevity, opt for the —its hybrid design adds steel coils for increased durability.
Why We Named It Best Affordable
Named among our picks for the best mattresses in a box, the Allswell Luxe Mattress features an extra-firm, 12-inch profile with a brick-like pattern woven on its outside cover, as a hint to the support to come. It has a pretty simple construction, but for the price, it’s a good pick for those who want an ultra-supportive and lifted feel. Most queen-size hybrid mattresses retail for at least $1,000 or more, but you can purchase a queen-size Allswell Luxe extra-firm mattress for less than $500.
How It Performed During Testing
I didn’t feel any resistance or a deep memory foam feel during testing. And as a stomach sleeper, I felt most comfortable in this position because there was no dip in my back, keeping my spine in proper alignment. Many of our other mattress testers agreed, resulting in Allswell Luxe scoring a 7 out of 10 for stomach sleeping. Since you sit more on top of the bed rather than inside its foam layers, it’s pretty easy to switch positions, a bonus for combination sleepers, or people who change sleep positions throughout the night, too.
Why We Named It Best For Heavy People
The Titan Plus, made by Brooklyn Bedding, is specifically designed to support more weight without softening its firm feel. That includes high-density foams and a layer of up to 900 8-inch coils constructed in-house to ensure quality and provide targeted support and motion isolation. According to Titan, the mattress is a 9 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so it’s one of the firmer beds in our roundup, next to the Plank Firm. The hybrid construction also promotes breathability, but especially hot sleepers can also upgrade to the GlacioTex Cooling Cover, which is woven with heat-wicking fibers.
How It Performed During Testing
One of our panel testers, who weighs over 250 pounds, says, “I’d say this mattress feels cushiony and firm at the same time.” Though it has an ultra-firm profile, he still found it accommodating while lying on his side. “My spine feels great as I lie on my side, and it’s not out of alignment,” he says. For those reasons, it earned high marks for comfort in all sleeping positions (side, back and stomach) among our heavyweight testers, scoring a 8.5 out of 10 for back sleeping and a 7.5 out of 10 for side and stomach sleeping. That said, if you’re seeking a cushier feel, consider the , which is the top recommendation in our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people.
Why We Named It Best Memory Foam
The ProAdapt in the firm option is the best pick for a lifted feel, as the bed’s dense foams contour to your curves without letting you sink into the bed. And for couples who share a mattress, the ProAdapt is top-notch at deadening movement across the mattress, which means fewer nighttime disruptions from your tossing-and-turning partner.
How It Performed During Testing
There are three mattresses in the Tempur-Pedic Adapt line—the base Adapt, ProAdapt and LuxeAdapt—and we’ve tested both the base model and Luxe version of the bed. They each scored highly in the categories that matter most for memory foam fans, pressure relief and motion isolation. The base Adapt scores a 8.5 out of 10 for its pressure-relieving abilities and 9 out of 10 for motion isolation, while the Luxe version scored 9 out of 10 for pressure relief and 9.5 out of 10 for motion isolation. Because the ProAdapt falls between the base and Luxe model, you can expect it to offer an upgraded performance compared to the base model without some of the premium features you’ll find in the LuxeAdapt mattress.
Additional Considerations
One thing to keep in mind is that memory foam has a tendency to trap heat, in our experience. The cooling cover on the ProAdapt goes some distance in combating that, but hot sleepers may find that memory foam, which responds to heat and pressure to closely contour around the body, just isn’t the best option. You should also consider another mattress if you weigh around 250 pounds or more, as the ProAdapt isn’t offered in a firm hybrid, which is a more supportive option. See how this bed stacks up against other models from the brand in our best Tempur-Pedic mattresses list.
Why We Named It Best For Back Pain
As the top pick in our guide to the best mattresses for back pain, the Saatva Classic features an ergonomic design that’s intended for comfort. To promote spinal alignment, the Saatva Classic has two layers of coils: zoned coils near the bottom that are more supportive in the center third of the mattress, and microcoils near the top for added support. It also includes both a high-density memory foam lumbar crown and a patented spinal wire. Together, they help relieve pressure and support a neutral spine. Further, the cushioned pillow top is zoned to be firmer under the lumbar region and softer underneath the trunk and shoulders.
How It Performed During Testing
During testing, our mattress and sleep updates writer Alexandra Garrett, who regularly experiences bouts of back pain, noted how comfortable the Saatva Classic felt while back sleeping. “I feel supported and elongated while lying on my back on this mattress, similar to the ,” she says. “It also provides a nice touch of cushioning around my hips, which I appreciate since I typically prefer a medium to medium-firm bed.” Those looking for a truly firm mattress should opt for the firm model, which Saatva rates an 8 out of 10. Why We Named It Best Organic
Featured in our guide to the best organic mattresses, Avocado holds a lengthy list of certifications, from Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) to Oeko-Tex, Made Safe and Fair Trade. To achieve an organic certification, their mattresses must meet strict environmental and safety standards throughout the entire supply chain, which serves as a testament to the quality of their beds. The Avocado Extra-Firm Mattress, in particular, is the brand’s newest (and firmest) addition to its lineup of organic beds. It features two layers of heavy-duty coils combined with organic Dunlop latex and natural coconut fibers for ample support with minimal sinkage—an ideal cocktail for many back and stomach sleepers.
How It Performed During Testing
Although we haven’t yet tested the new Avocado Extra-Firm Mattress, we’ve reviewed other beds from the brand that feature similar organic materials and third-party certifications, such as the . “This bed feels ‘green’ at the get go,” says Garrett, who was one of the panelists who tested the Avocado Green Mattress. “I suffer from allergies and I can see how this mattress and its natural materials might help ease some of those symptoms.” Both the Avocado Green Mattress and new Extra-Firm model are made with GOLS- and GOTS-certified latex, cotton and wool to produce a nontoxic, naturally-sourced sleep environment, making them a nice option for sleepers with allergies, in addition to those who prioritize sustainability.
Why We Named It Best Pillow Top
The WinkBed is one of those accommodating beds that appeal to a wide variety of people, partially because of its cushioned Euro top, which gives it an undeniably comfortable and balanced feel. The firm profile falls around a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale according to WinkBeds, and we agree with the brand—myself, along with four other team members, tested the bed firsthand. We think this model is best for individuals under 250 pounds who want a firm feel with the added cushion of a fluffy Euro top.
How It Performed During Testing
The WinkBed scored highly for comfort in all sleeping positions, earning a 8.4 out of 10 for side sleeping and a 9 out of 10 for back and stomach sleeping. One of our panel testers also noted that its pillow top makes the mattress seem more luxurious. “This bed is firm yet cushioned. The first thing I noticed was how plush and pillowy the very top layer of the mattress was, which makes it seem more luxurious. I feel very lifted when lying on this bed, which is ideal for those looking for a firm mattress,” she says.

What To Consider When Shopping For An Extra-Firm Mattress
As you shop for an extra-firm mattress, keep a few things in mind. Beyond your preferred sleep position, material choice and mattress construction both play important roles in how a particular mattress feels. Warranties, trial windows and special features—like cooling layers if you’re a hot sleeper or pressure relief if you’re routinely waking up with aches and pains—are also worth considering.
Materials
Some mattress constructions are inherently firmer than others, so being mindful of the properties of different materials can help steer you toward an extra-firm bed that meets your needs.
- Memory foam. Memory foam responds to heat and pressure to contour closely around the body’s curves. It’s known for excellent pressure relief and motion isolation, but it can have a sinking sensation that may not appeal to everyone. If you like memory foam but prefer extra-firm mattresses, look for high-density memory foam with a high firmness rating. Keep in mind that mattresses made with memory foam can also run hot, so some manufacturers use cooling infusions or perforations to minimize heat retention.
- Innersprings. Innerspring coils are interconnected, which creates a network of support that doesn’t isolate motion particularly well. Depending on the gauge, innersprings can offer firmer support.
- Pocketed coils. This type of coil is individually wrapped, which offers more targeted support and better motion isolation. Because the coils can move independently, they do a better job of responding to the body’s movements. They can also be zoned to deliver firmer support in areas of deeper compression.
- Latex. Latex foam is sourced from the sap of rubber trees and, more often than not, gives a bed a firmer, more supportive feel. It has a buoyant feel that gives you the sensation of sleeping on the mattress, not sinking down into it, and it’s a temperature-neutral material. It’s incredibly durable and it offers comparable pressure relief to memory foam without the heat retention. On the downside, it’s a heavy material that adds to the bottom line.
- Polyfoam. Short for polyurethane foam, poly foam is an inexpensive material similar to memory foam. It lacks the viscosity of memory foam, so it doesn’t respond to heat and pressure in the same way. It’s also prone to off-gassing. While you can find firm polyfoam, the material isn’t known for its long-term durability.
Firmness
Every mattress has a firmness rating—a 1 to 10 score that indicates how soft or firm a mattress feels. While all the mattresses on this list are “extra-firm,” they fall on different spots of this scale. Some can have a softer, luxury firm feel with a rating of 5 to 7, and others with a rating of 9 or 10 have an ultra-firm feel. While these ratings are generally unscientific, they still give you an idea of what to expect.
Sleeping Position
Back and stomach sleepers tend to do best on extra-firm mattresses. Both positions require a firm surface to keep the hips elevated, which helps ensure proper spinal alignment. An extra-firm mattress can also keep your body weight more evenly distributed, reducing the risk of pressure-point pain.
Body Type
Your weight and body type should be taken into consideration when choosing an extra-firm mattress. In general, the heavier you are, the softer a mattress is going to feel. Conversely, the less you weigh, the firmer a bed feels. With the exception of the , our extra-firm mattress picks may feel ultra-firm to a petite or average sleeper, but more like a medium-firm bed for individuals over 250 pounds. For an extra-supportive mattress made specifically for plus-sized sleepers, check out our guide to the best mattresses for heavy people.
Trial
Since so many mattresses are purchased online these days instead of in a showroom, a trial window is particularly important. Most brands offer trials ranging from 100 to 365 days, which is plenty of time to decide if a certain mattress is a fit for your needs. Keep in mind that it can take up to a month or so to adjust to a new mattress, so most brands ask that you test a mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a return. Policies vary depending on the mattress company, so review the fine print before making a purchase.
