While a soft and pillowy mattress may sound ideal to many, a firmer mattress is often best to achieve proper spinal alignment and prevent back pain, especially for back and stomach sleepers or those who weigh over 250 pounds. To find the best firm mattresses, I worked with senior mattress and sleep editor Bridget Chapman to retest 29 different beds alongside eight panel testers. Our top pick, the , is aptly named with a flippable design that features a firm side and an extra-firm side for maximum support.
Still, the best firm mattress for you depends on your body size, preferred sleeping position, budget and whether or not you have any chronic pain. For that reason, we selected nine firm mattress winners—all of which we’ve tested multiple times. Chapman and I collectively have nearly a decade of experience testing sleep products, including over 200 different beds. As a result, we’re able to curate recommendations, including guides to the best firm pillows and best firm mattress toppers. Below, find our top firm mattress choices.
Why We Named It Best Overall
Along with its impressive firmness and value, we named the Plank Firm best overall because it tested well for back and stomach sleeping, ease of movement, edge support and motion isolation—all key categories that determine the quality of a firm bed.
How It Performed During Testing
Six different testers tried the Plank Firm Mattress; one tester who weighs over 150 pounds says, “I would describe this bed as dense and firm,” adding it’s “pretty enjoyable to lie on” in all sleep positions. And even some lightweight testers found the Plank Firm to be comfortable, like Alexandra Garrett, Forbes Vetted updates writer, who says, “I would rate this mattress a 9 [out of 10] for back sleeping. I felt lifted and supported. What was really nice was that I could feel bits of my lower spine decompress, which was especially nice since I struggle regularly with lower back pain.”
I also had a similar sentiment while back sleeping on the Plank Firm, and found it separated the space between my shoulders in a way that felt ultra relieving—like when you lie on the ground and your back cracks because your spine was pushed into alignment. However, Garrett warns it’s not comfortable for lightweight side sleepers, as it offers them “little to no pressure relief.” However, we recommend heavyweight sleepers consider upgrading to the , which is a touch more supportive thanks to its coil base.

Why We Named It Best For Side Sleepers
Firm mattresses aren’t typically recommended to side sleepers, but we found the Helix Dawn Luxe to be one of the few accommodating exceptions. With zoned lumbar support and enhanced contouring, this hybrid foam-and-coil mattress promotes comfort and ensures stability without causing pressure on side sleepers’ hips and shoulders. It also comes with a plush pillow top that makes it two inches taller than the standard for a cozier feel. And thanks to its breathable Tencel cover, you’re less likely to overheat in the middle of the night.
How It Performed During Testing
Our testers rated its pressure relief an 8.5 out of 10, an impressive score for a firm bed—I was surprised at how much pressure relief I felt on my side while testing. I think the zoned support in combination with the fluffy, airy pillow top makes it more accommodating than your average firm bed. Garrett also tested the Helix Dawn Luxe, and says, “While this mattress is advertised at firm, it still felt really comfortable while side sleeping, possibly thanks to its plush pillow top. My hip and shoulders felt comfortable and the bed gave a good amount of pressure relief in this position. That said, I did feel a tiny bit of pressure build up around my shoulder after a while.” As a result, it’s best for side sleepers who weigh over 150 pounds.
However, we recommend combination sleepers (those who switch between their back and side or side and stomach) consider the Dawn Luxe, which the majority of our testers rated a 9 or 10 out of 10 for back and stomach sleeping. It also scored well for ease of movement.
Why We Named It Best For Back Pain
From top to bottom, the Saatva Classic is reinforced with features to help prevent back pain, including a quilted Euro top with organic cotton, a memory foam lumbar support layer, a lumbar zone spinal wire, zoned individually wrapped coils and a base coil unit. All these layers work together to keep your hips and spine supported in different positions while still offering your joints pressure relief. The Saatva Classic also has high-density foam wrapped around the perimeter for enhanced edge support.
How It Performed During Testing
While testing the Saatva Classic firm model, Garrett says her lower back and hips felt supported while stomach sleeping, adding, “My back is able to settle into a relaxed, neutral alignment without feeling as if it’s being lifted too far.” As for back sleeping, she says, “I feel supported and elongated while lying on my back on this mattress, similar to the . It also provides a nice touch of cushioning around my hips, which I appreciate since I typically prefer a medium to medium-firm bed.” Though not as firm as the Plank, our testers say the Saatva Classic has a more luxurious feel and accommodates more sleeping positions for various weights. You can learn more in our Saatva Classic Mattress review.
Consider the if you live with chronic pain issues like sciatica or fibromyalgia, as its softer feel is designed to mold to your body for better circulation.
Why We Named It Best Budget
Regularly priced under $400, the Siena Memory Foam Mattress is a great pick if you’re shopping on a budget. Siena rates it as medium-firm, but we found it to be a bit firmer than that. This makes it a good option for back, stomach and combination sleepers, and couples who may have differing sleep preferences. While the bottom layers of the mattress provide firmness and support, the top layer—consisting of two inches of adaptive gel memory foam—adds softness and pressure point relief.
How It Performed During Testing
Six testers tried the Siena Memory Foam Mattress and most of them described the feel as dense, firm and lifted with little sinkage, unlike a mattress like the , which feels more doughy, or the , which is much more responsive and cushiony. Though a majority of our testers found the Siena to be firm and stiff, one of our testers over 250 pounds thought it was softer than advertised and experienced great pressure relief (varying body weights perceive mattresses differently). The Siena also tested really well for motion isolation, with one of our testers saying, “It’s ideal for a couple that’s on totally different schedules and doesn’t want to impact the other one’s sleep.”
Heavyweight sleepers over 250 pounds who want a firm feel should consider a firmer hybrid mattress instead, like the below. Along with being extra-firm, it tested better for support and durability.
Why We Named It Best Extra-Firm
What used to be the Allswell Brick is now the Luxe Extra Firm Mattress. It’s a no-frills bed that excels at support and alignment for back and stomach sleepers, along with people weighing over 250 pounds. With a queen size retailing under $500, it’s one of the most affordable hybrid mattresses you can buy—and one of the firmest.
How It Performed During Testing
Our testers rated the Allswell the firmest of 29 beds tested back-to-back, and I think one of the mattress’ strongest features (aside from firmness) is its edge support. Even when I sit on the edge of the bed, my body barely sinks. One of our testers adds, “The edge feels very supportive across the entire bed. There is the same amount of give in the middle as near the head or foot of the bed, which is very little.” And if you’re looking for a lifted feel, this bed delivers. According to Chapman, “This mattress has a dense foam feel. You don’t sink into the bed very much and it’s quite firm. The thick cover provides a little cushioning, but overall you’re very ‘on top’ of the bed. It has more of a consistent dense foam feel than the , though.” Usually a mattress feels firmer to those lighter in weight, but a tester weighing over 250 pounds also rates this Allswell as extra-firm.
During testing, we did find this bed to be too firm for side sleepers of most sizes. If you spend some of the night on your side, consider the instead.
Why We Named It Best For Couples
The WinkBed checks the boxes for key categories that matter most to couples: motion isolation, cooling and an accommodating feel that works for a variety of sleep positions.
How It Performed During Testing
Four out of five testers found the plus model offered a good amount of pressure relief while lying on their back, stomach and even side. Garrett says, “This bed is firm yet cushioned. The first thing I noticed was how plush and pillowy the very top layer of the mattress was, which made it seem more luxurious. I feel very lifted when sitting on this bed.” Chapman adds, “The brand did a really nice job creating a mattress with the right balance of plushness and support.” This means couples don’t have to compromise on comfort if they have different sleeping positions or weights. We recommend the firmer model for those weighing less than 250 pounds and the plus model for plus-size or mixed-weight couples. Our testers also gave the WinkBed a 9 out of 10 for edge support and an 8 out of 10 for motion isolation, which are important features for those who co-sleep.
Forbes Vetted deputy editor Rose Gordon Sala also slept on the softest WinkBed model for over 30 nights. She says it skews a little firmer than the rating suggests, but that overall the bed is comfortable and supportive with outstanding edge support. Here’s her full WinkBed review for more insights.
Why We Named It Best Organic
The Avocado Green is made with organic wool, organic cotton and GOLS-certified organic latex, which come from the company’s own farms in India and Guatemala. It’s also Fair Trade, Greenguard Gold and Made Safe Certified, meaning that all the materials used to make the mattresses are free from ingredients that harm you or the environment. As for its firmness, we put the standard model of the Avocado Green around a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, thanks to its dense latex foam and individually wrapped coils. The coils are arranged to provide seven zones of targeted support to help keep your spine in alignment.
How It Performed During Testing
During testing, we found it has an ideal profile for back and stomach sleepers. Garrett says, “While lying on my back, I felt aligned and supported. I felt like I was in a healthy alignment, and as someone who does have lower back pain concerns, I didn’t feel any pinching or sinkage that could trigger that discomfort.” Our long-term tester agreed: “I’m thrilled to report that it’s still just as durable and supportive as the day we got it,” says home and kitchen editor Sholeen Damarwala, who has been sleeping on the Avocado Green Mattress for two years. “I appreciate the natural cushioning and support it offers. I’m also a fan of the organic, natural and nontoxic materials used, especially since my husband suffers from allergies.”
We also scored it highly for being bouncy and easy to move around on. However, it didn’t test as well for edge support and motion isolation, two factors that matter for couples. See our full Avocado Green Mattress review for more information.
Why We Named It Best Cooling
The Aurora Luxe is engineered from top to bottom to promote cooling. Its hybrid construction combines airflow-promoting inner coils with breathable, gel-infused memory foam that work together to regulate temperature. It’s available in three firmness options, including firm. You can also add a pillow top to any firmness model for an extra fee if you want a little more cushioning—Brooklyn Bedding recommends the firm model for stomach and back sleepers and people who need additional lumbar support, but we find it’s pressure-relieving enough for side sleepers when the pillow top is added.
How It Performed During Testing
Four of our five testers noticed the immediate cooling sensation the cover provides, and after sleeping on it for several months, Chapman says the Aurora Luxe regulates temperature very well. It also tested great for ease of movement, edge support and motion isolation. The very pillowy top also makes it very comfortable for all sleeping positions, including side sleepers. It has a bouncy pillow feel to it with minimal sinking, but it has ample give for the hip and shoulders,” one tester says. Note: We tested the firm model with the added 2-inch pillow top, but you can go without it for a true firm profile. See our full Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Mattress review for more information.
Why We Named It Best For Heavy People
The Titan Plus Hybrid Mattress from Brooklyn Bedding outperformed other beds in its class like the and the by providing more support and durability. It’s built to support up to 1,000 pounds (500 on each side), thanks to its layers of dense foam and pocketed steel coils that live near the base of the mattress.
How It Performed During Testing
After trying the Titan Plus, one of our heavyweight testers says, “This mattress is firm but feels very comfortable. My spine feels great as I lie on my side, not out of alignment.” He also says it’s great for stomach sleeping, and is a generally luxurious mattress with a balanced feel. “I’d say it feels cushiony and firm at the same time, which is something I enjoy about this mattress. It feels soft but has a lot of support.”
It also tested really well for ease of movement, edge support and motion isolation. However, if you want a softer feel with more give, consider the .
Other Firm Mattresses We Tested
Our panel of testers reviewed 29 different mattresses to determine the best firm beds for this list. The mattresses below didn’t make our final cut for this guide; however, they still scored highly in key performance categories, making them worthy of your consideration.
- (Forbes Vetted score: 4.5 out of 5): This mattress has many of the same qualities of our top choice, the ; it scored high in many of the same performance categories like support and comfort. However, it may feel too firm to some lightweight to average-weight sleepers. We recommend this mattress instead to heavyweight sleepers looking for reinforced support.
- (Forbes Vetted score: 4.25 out of 5): This mattress is one of our favorite options for heavyweight individuals, earning a spot in our guide to the best mattresses for heavy people. Similar to the , the Helix mattress can hold up to 1,000 pounds in total (500 on each side), which is double the weight of an average bed. However, the Titan just barely edged out the Helix Plus in the support category.
- (Forbes Vetted score: 4.25 out of 5): This mattress has a supportive, yet cushioned feel that earned high marks for pressure relief from our panel testers. While the brand says it has a medium-firm feel, we found it to be firmer than advertised, making it likely too firm for most side sleepers but better suited instead for back and stomach sleepers.
How We Tested The Best Firm Mattresses
To identify the best firm mattresses, we relied on our years of mattress-testing experience and our panel testing efforts, where we evaluate key performance factors, such as firmness, edge support, pressure relief and more. Learn more about how we test mattresses in our comprehensive scoring guide.
Process
- Collective testing background: To identify an initial set of contenders, we considered our mattress testing background, which includes testing over 200 different beds.
- Panel testing: We tested 29 mattresses alongside a panel of eight individuals over two-day period to get feedback from different weight classes and sleeping positions. Performance factors were rated on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the best.
- Long-term testing: We send our highest-scoring beds home with long-term testers to sleep on for at least 30 nights in their own homes.
Criteria
- Firmness: We document the firmness of every mattress we test. We also lie on the mattresses ourselves to make sure the brand’s firmness rating aligns with how it actually feels. All but one of the mattresses in this guide are rated above a 7 out of 10 on the brand’s firmness scale. The exception is the , which is rated as a 6.5 out of 10; however, we found that it feels firmer than advertised.
- Support: We sit and lie on the edge of the mattress in the three primary sleeping positions (side, back and stomach). Then, we write down if the edges feel like they’re sinking or collapsing under our weight. To earn a spot in this guide, each mattress needed to score above a 6 out of 10 for this category.
- Pressure relief: We lie on our side, back and stomach, noting any discomfort or pressure buildup. Although the mattresses in this guide are firm, they also all scored above a 6 out of 10 in this category with the exception of the . It doesn’t provide as much give as our top picks, which is why it’s our favorite extra-firm option.
What To Consider When Choosing A Firm Mattress
There are several things to think about when shopping for a firm mattress. We break down exactly what to look for below.
How To Determine The Right Firmness For You
Yes, the mattresses on this list are all “firm,” but there are different levels of firmness, including soft, medium, medium-firm, firm or extra-firm. No matter which firmness you prefer, you want to find the right amount of “give” to relieve pressure, while still providing support and keeping your entire body in alignment. Here’s how to get just that:
- Sleeping position: The position you sleep in has a big impact on what mattress feels most comfortable to you. “For back sleepers, a firm mattress helps maintain proper spinal alignment by providing support across the body, preventing the lower back from sinking and reducing strain on the spine,” says , neurosurgeon at the Virginia Spine Institute. “Stomach sleepers also benefit from a firm surface, as it prevents the torso from dipping, which can lead to a curve in the spine and potential discomfort.” On the other hand, for side sleepers, a softer mattress is a better bet.
- Body type: According to Kemp, “Your body weight impacts how firm, supportive and comfortable a mattress feels. Choosing a mattress that matches your weight and sleep preferences is essential for proper spinal alignment and pressure relief.” As a general rule of thumb, heavyweight sleepers should opt for firmer beds, while petite sleepers are better off with something softer or medium-firm.
- Pain concerns: “Generally, people who suffer from back pain benefit from mattresses on the firmer end of the spectrum, since they provide pressure relief and support for your spine,” says Kemp. We recommend a medium-firm to firm mattress for those with back pain. However, softer mattresses can provide additional pressure relief if you have hip pain, knee pain or shoulder pain.
Mattress Type
Firm mattresses come in a variety of types, each offering a different construction and feel. Some are firmer than others, and some sleep cooler than others. When searching for a firm mattress, consider which construction is right for you.
- Memory foam mattresses are the softest out of the bunch. These beds are known for their responsive body-molding capabilities and minimal motion transfer, making them a great choice for couples. They do have a reputation for being hot, but some are fitted with cooling technology to help alleviate that issue. People who don’t like the “sink-in” feeling, though, should opt for a different mattress type.
- Innerspring mattresses are a traditional bed style made with a base of coils and a thin comfort layer up top, which gives this type a bouncy and supportive feel. They’re typically firmer and sleep cooler than all-foam mattresses, but lack the plushness that some sleepers prefer.
- Hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds. They combine an innerspring coil system for support with upper foam layers for comfort. Because of this construction, they can be firmer and more breathable than all-foam mattresses. If you’re unsure what kind of mattress to buy, a hybrid is generally a good choice since this type offers a little bit of everything.
- Latex mattresses are one of the more nontraditional mattress types. Latex beds are made from, well, latex. However, some latex mattresses are made with synthetic latex whereas others are constructed with natural latex, like Dunlop or Talalay. This mattress type excels in a number of areas, including pressure relief, cooling and support. Firm latex beds offer a nice balance of buoyancy and sturdiness.
Trial Period And Warranty
A mattress is a big investment to make as an online purchase, especially considering you can’t try it out beforehand. To ease customers’ concerns, many retailers offer generous trial periods and warranties, so you can make sure your mattress is the right fit.
- Trial periods usually range anywhere from 90 days to a full year. Most mattress companies also require you to sleep on the mattress for a while before you’re eligible to return it. Your dream mattress may feel uncomfortable for the first several nights while your body adjusts, so it’s standard to be ineligible for a return or refund for at least the first 30 nights.
- Mattress warranties typically cover manufacturer defects, but several mattress companies offer extra coverage for a relatively small fee. Most mattresses are designed to last seven to ten years, so a 10-year warranty is ideal.
