Praised for its breathable texture and lived-in aesthetic, linen has been a steadfast go-to for hot sleepers and increased temperatures. But with a soft and cozy feel that only improves with each wash cycle, it’s also a favorable material for fall and winter seasons. The best linen sheets feel velvety soft—never scratchy—and have you looking forward to bedtime each night. Forbes Vetted staffers, contributors and I tested 11 sets of linen sheets, comparing them for softness, weight and materials, and the Bed Threads 100% French Flax Linen Sheet Set is our favorite. The sheets have a buttery-soft feel, an oversized fit and have withstood years of regular wear and tear.
The best linen sheets keep you cool though the summer and cozy in the winter, like our favorite sets from Boll & Branch and Cultiver.

Linen is derived from the flax plant, with fibers extracted from its stems and spun into yarn. Natural fibers tend to be the best for sheets and bedding because they wick away moisture and let air pass through, unlike synthetic fabrics like polyester that trap heat and odor. Stay comfortable in any season with the best linen sheets below, selected by seasoned sleep product testers. Before Bed Threads, I reserved linen for my summer wardrobe. But after testing linen sheets for the first time from the brand during the winter, I was pleasantly surprised by how soft and cozy they felt when I climbed into bed—and linen quickly became my favorite bedding type. These linen sheets from Bed Threads have a buttery feel, similar to sateen sheets, but are more breathable and warm, and feature a matte finish.
The sheets also feel softer now than when I took them out of the package. They’re made with 100% premium flax linen, have a medium weight of 170 GSM (grams per square meter) and come in a wide range of colorways, from neutrals to rich earth tones. One of our testers also labeled them as an all-time favorite, saying, “They are the Goldilocks of sheets for me: not too thick, but not too thin."

Sijo, like Bed Threads, uses 100% flax linen. The material is sourced in small batches from Normandy, preshrunk and stonewashed for durability and a softer feel; this ensures immediate coziness after unboxing. The Sijo LuxeWeave Linen Sheet Set’s also GOTS certified, a guarantee that the material is at least 95% organic, and that Sijo met rigid ecological standards at each point along the supply chain.
After sleeping between these linens, our tester found them to be soft and smooth. “They have a heavy feel, but not overwhelmingly so, while maintaining breathability,” she says. With a 16-inch fitted sheet pocket, Sijo says it can suit mattresses up to 13 inches thick, so confirm your bed’s dimensions before purchasing to ensure they’ll fit properly.

Avocado is the most popular organic bedding retailer on the market. In addition to being nature-conscious, its Natural Linen Sheets are breathable and ultra-comfortable for when you need a lightweight layer to cozy up with. “I especially love them for the summer,” says our tester. “They are so airy and absorb moisture well, which keeps me dry from sweat.”
Prewashed for immediate comfort, Avocado advises against fabric softeners and bleach (a rule that applies to all linen sheets) and recommends wool dryer balls as a softening agent instead. One downside is the Avocado Natural Linen Sheets’ limited color options, just two neutral shades: white and natural.

At one point during the summer, my entire mattress was dressed in Cultiver linen bedding, from the pillowcases and sheets to the duvet cover. I was initially drawn to the brand’s natural, earthy colorways that were similar to those offered by Bed Threads. But when testing the Cultiver Linen Sheet Set, I was quickly impressed by its neutral weight, along with its ultra-soft feel. Senior reviews editor Anna Perling also tested these sheets, and notes, “This linen set was the softest I’ve tried, and most luxurious: the texture is velvety and sublime.” She also highlights the attractive color options, calling the sky shade "flecked and striated, not totally saturated as with other linen sheets I tested," creating what she calls a lovely visual effect with a more rustic, textured look.
The brand uses 100% European linen that’s Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it’s been tested for unhealthy chemicals. For this set, you can include or remove pillowcases, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, depending on your needs and what’s already stored in your linen closet. The pillowcases feature envelope enclosures to keep your pillows in place, while the flat sheet has a decorative border around the entire sheet, rather than just the top.

The Citizenry Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set is woven in Portugal from a longtime family-run mill, using luxurious French flax linen that’s stonewashed for maximum softness. “I love the feel of The Citizenry’s linen sheets,” says one of our testers, who claims they’re lighter than most other linen sets she’s tried. “They stand out for being soft and airy, and quickly became one of my favorite sets.”
She also calls out the company’s partnership with a Portuguese linen mill, and “its overall ethos of transparency, fair trade and wage standards.” Choose between a variety of neutral, patterned or jewel-toned colors. You can’t beat the quality for its price, especially when the sheets are on sale.

With a garment wash finish that gives them a buttery feel straight out of the package, the linen sheets from The Company Store “are among the softest sheets I’ve tried,” says Perling. She was impressed after testing the dusty blue colorway, which rivals the velvety feel of the luxurious sets from Cultiver and Bed Threads. “The linen is soft yet tightly woven, and has held up well over six months of use.”
The fitted sheet features deep pockets that accommodate mattresses up to 18 inches thick, making it a good option for taller beds and ones fitted with a thick mattress topper. You can also rest easy knowing the material is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning it’s been tested for harmful substances. One drawback to note is that most color choices are out of stock for the complete sheet set, but individual pieces are still available.

Linen sheets are great for hot sleepers because their natural fibers remain breathable through the night and wick away moisture, and this airy set from Boll & Branch is particularly appealing. Made from fine 100% European flax linen, the fabric’s lightweight to help combat night sweats and climbing temperatures. “These are perfectly lovely sheets, with a standard, soft texture and tight weave that has held up well over six months,” says Perling, who calls them a worthy investment.
Garment washed with a special four-step process that prioritizes sustainability and clean manufacturing, these linens don’t compromise softness for breathability, and are comparable to our best soft choice from The Company Store. They’re also Fair Trade certified, a third-party assurance that the people who make them work in safe conditions and receive fair compensation.
Other Linen Sheets We’ve Tested
Although these sheets aren’t included above, we think they’re accommodating for certain sleepers and should be highlighted as worthwhile options.
Buffy Belgian Linen Sheet Set: Enjoy the comfort and breathability of linen at a great value with the Buffy Belgian Linen Sheet Set. One of our testers credits this set for converting her to linen, as she used to think the material was scratchy and uncomfortable. Instead, she says this set’s long-staple fibers give the sheets a soft and smooth texture. However, most colorways and sizes are sold out, which is why we didn’t include them in our main list.
Coop Linen-Cotton Sheet Set: Another good value choice, these sheets offer a comfortable blend of linen and cotton, two natural fibers known for being moisture-wicking and breathable. They achieve the relaxed feel and look of linen, while offering the softness of cotton. I enjoyed these sheets after testing them, but they left me feeling a little too warm during the summer as a hot sleeper.
Piglet In Bed Mix And Match Bundle: Ideal for personalization, like material type and color combinations, we found the Piglet In Bed linen set feels “nice to the touch” and retails at an ultra-competitive price. The pillowcases also have short flaps to keep pillows secure. With that said, after testing so many sets side by side, Perling says these sheets “feel rougher and looser” compared to others she tested.
Modern Dane European Linen Duvet Cover Set: Made from high-end Dutch, French and Belgian flax, these sheets and duvet cover are garment washed for premium softness. But the weave is looser than the other sheets we’ve tested, which can be appealing for temperature but may degrade durability, and they weren’t our favorite compared to other sets with comparable prices.

How We Tested The Best Linen Sheets
When determining which linen sheets to test and feature on our list, we followed specific criteria, including firsthand testing experience, thorough research and analysis of numerous consumer reviews.
We scanned the market for top-rated linen sheets from reputable brands, paying special attention to bestsellers, to identify sheets worth testing. We made sure to include a variety of options for different budgets and tastes.
Every sheet set highlighted above has been personally tested by Dillon, Perling or another Forbes Vetted staffer or contributor.
Sheet sets were washed (following the manufacturer’s guidance) to test for pilling, wrinkling and overall durability.
We also considered key features like GSM, material type, certifications, durability, pilling and breathability.
What To Consider When Shopping For Linen Sheets
Weight
According to Lauren Wood, cofounder at Sirimiri, linen is an optimal textile material for bedding thanks to “its breathability and insulation balance.” She adds, “Natural fibers wick away sweat and allow our bodies to breathe.” That said, the heavier the sheet, the warmer it sleeps. Linen weight is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), and you can expect materials with a higher GSM to feel thicker and heavier. We recommend you keep your preferences in mind—and whether or not you’re prone to night sweats—when narrowing down your linen selection.
Texture
Linen has a reputation for being rough in texture, but most high-quality linens are soft from the start and get better with each wash. You can also prioritize stonewashed or prewashed sheets, which lead to a softer, non-starchy finish. Also keep in mind that linen fabrics are more prone to wrinkling “due to their looser fiber structure,” says Parima Ijaz, founder and CEO of Pure Parima. To prevent wrinkling, remove linen from the dryer immediately after the cycle ends, or even while the sheets are still a little damp. “Hang them, or even put sheets on the bed laid flat to finish the remainder of the drying process,” she suggests.
Care
Most linen sheets are machine washable, but always check their care tag to confirm details like water temperature. You should also avoid using harsh soaps, fabric softeners or bleach on your linen, which can compromise the structure of its flax fibers. Instead, add a set of dryer balls to your drying cycle to loosen fibers and fluff fabric. As for a washing cadence, “We firmly believe you should be switching out your sheets weekly to keep them hygienic and keep them from setting into creased positions,” says Ijaz.
It’s also important to note that linen sheets have a tendency to pill and produce lint, especially when they’re straight out of a dryer. Be sure to clear the trap after use and properly shake out your sheets to prevent excess lint, and know that pilling improves with regular maintenance.
Certifications
Most of the linen sheets named in our roundup have earned one or more certifications that speak to their quality and dedication to sustainability.
Made Safe: Short for Made With Safe Ingredients, this certification screens products against a list of thousands of banned or restricted substances, which includes many hazardous categories such as VOCs, heavy metals and flame retardants.
Fair Trade: A Fair Trade certification ensures that producers follow strict social, economic and environmental standards, including safe working conditions and sustainable production practices.
Oeko-Tex Standard 100: This certification ensures a textile product has been independently tested for harmful substances and verified as safe for human health.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Linen sheets are a great choice for hot sleepers and those who live in a humid climate. Linen sheets are airy and breathable, allowing heat and moisture to escape, but maintain softness for all-night comfort.
Generally, most linen sheets can be washed on a delicate cycle in cold to lukewarm water and then tumble dried on low. That said, always check and follow the care label on your sheet set for detailed individual instructions, as they can vary from brand to brand. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines helps keep your sheets in the best shape possible for years to come.
After testing linen sheets through hot and warm seasons, we found that Bed Threads, Cultiver and The Citizenry offer some of the highest-quality linen, responsibly sourced from premier regions around the globe, like France and Portugal.
